robert's Story
I began my career as a news and sports photographer in 1958 at KGLO-TV in Mason City, then went to Forest City at the Summit. In 1962 I started with the Spectator in Joliet, a weekly news and sports magazine where I photographed such teams as the Chicago Bears, White Sox, Cubs, Northwestern and U. of Illinois. In 1964 I started at the Janesville Wisconsin Gazette where I photographed the Packers, Milwaukee Bucks and the U. of Wisconsin among other news stuff. Then in 1970 I returned to Mason City and ran my own portrait studio for a while before going back to KIMT-TV where I stayed until 1980 when I went on the road for Olan Mills as a portrait photographer. In 1982 my wife contracted Cancer and I came off the road to care for her and started two bars in the Waterloo area. After she finished her chemo, we moved to Clear Lake and I began working as a bartender and chef at several establishments until she died. During that time we went to Alaska where I worked as a chef at the Portage Glacier Lodge for 2 years. After my wife's death I cooked at the Nora Springs Inn for 2 years, finally moving back to Clear Lake and cooking at several ...Expand for more
places until I retired at age 62. During that time I married for the third time to my current wife Linda, a beautiful Swedish girl 13 years my junior who has been a nurse for the last 45 years, retiring in 2013. We have 2 sons, Michael and Jeremy who are both family men, giving us 6 wonderful grandkids and 3 great grandkids. We live in the home my parents bought in 1950 that they left to us after they died. I have been a recovering alcoholic for the last 18 years after a 41 year whirlwind bout of booze and drugs, and I would not change one day of my life, even the jail times, because I have had fun and I did it my way. My recreation included bowling, Barbershop quartet singing and chorus directing, church choir directing, solo work, shooting pool, pistol shooting in Alaska, and I would be remiss if I didn't include bar hopping. Now at my age, my recreation is watching TV, surfing the net and loving my soul mate and best friend, Linda, who I have been married to for 16 years, as of St. Patrick's Day 2017, and enjoying my kids and grandkids. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Oh yeah, and never trust a skinny cook. Bob Godfrey.
