Robin's Story
I went to Loyola University after Sandburg and I have been living in Chicago since 1983, except for one year in New York in 1995, working in Foreign Exchange for UBS. I retired from banking after returning from NY and started a company, Windy City Wine Consultants, which offers personal sommelier services to wine collectors. Yes, I really have made a career out of drinking:) But, trust me, I kiss alot of frogs, per se, in the process.
I always enjoyed the water, and have had several boats along the way. I have sailed all over the place, but tired of all the physicality of sailing and bought a power boat about 10 years ago. Just turn the key and go! The boat is downtown, so that's really easy and I feel pretty lucky to be able to have people down to enjoy the city by water. I also spend alot of time in the California wine country (and others), "doing research." I will probably end up there at some point, permanently.
I got married in 2002 to Dan Olas, a fellow boater incidently. We met when we started commiserating over our crummy mutual mechanic, and the rest is history. W...Expand for more
e had a relatively carefree four years until Dan was diagnosed with Stage I colon cancer in December 2006, which shortly thereafter metastisized to his liver and became Advanced Stage IV. My mother died of breast cancer in 2005 and I really couldn't beleive I was reliving this all over again, but Dan has taught me how to sustain grace under pressure and we have managed this very well together. We do not have any children, and in a way, it is a releif, all things considered. We sit on the Associate Board of Gilda's Club (Chicago) and speak to many doners and medical faculty boards to raise awareness (and $) for this remarkable organization, which has been a lifesaver for us, personally, and so many others who don't know where to turn for support (after diagnosis). Dan's prognosis is not very good for the future, but he looks great and feels great and we've just had to learn how to manage one day at a time and count our blessings every day. Put it this way - I don't exactly kick the dog anymore!
I had such a great time at our last reunion and look forward to seeing everyone soon.
