Robin's Story

Life I was born September 18, 1942, and lived at 129 Portugal Cove Road in St. John's. I attended The Model School from September, 1947 to June, 1958. I enrolled as an officer candidate in the RCAF when I turned 17, and commenced training at RCAF Centralia on February 5th, 1960. I graduated from the Nav. school at RCAF Winnipeg in April of 1961. The RCAF then sent me to their survival school for winter bush survival at Hinton, Alberta, and then Arctic survival at Resolute Bay. I was then posted to RCAF Summerside, P.E.I. at the anti-submarine warfare school. Fortunately I contracted acute appendicitis before I finished this school, and after 10 days in Prince County hospital and 3 weeks on sick leave I was re-posted to 121 Search & Rescue Squadron at RCAF Sea Island (Vancouver). In 1964 we moved the squadron to RCAF Comox on Vancouver Island. I elected to leave the air force in August of 1966 rather than wear a "green" uniform. During my time in the air force I was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to many places - including a memorable around-the-world trip that took 90 days in 1964 that covered 36,000 miles, and that included stops in Hawaii, Wake Island, Guam, Okinawa, the Phillipines, Japan, Singapore, Penang, Bangkok, Hong Kong, the island of Gan, Barhain, Cyprus, England, a...Expand for more
nd Newfoundland before returning to Comox. While still in the air force I completed high school senior matriculation at Courtenay Senior Secondary School. I then enrolled at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. in September of 1966. I went to school year-round without any breaks and studied Economics & Commerce, and graduated in May, 1968. Since then I have been active in the British Columbia trucking industry. I have been successful in resisting any and all attempts to transfer me out of B.C. In the mean time, I got married, had 3 kids - a girl and 2 boys - and now have 6 grand children - 3 girls and 3 boys. I retired at 62 in March of 2005, and now am a man of leisure. My wife and I travel a lot - Mexico, Costa Rica, Africa, etc. I return to Newfoundland every two years. I still have 2 brothers and one sister living in St.John's. These last two times I have rented a house in Brigus for one month, and some of my kids and grandkids visit with us. I greatly enjoyed the Model School re-union in 1999 and only wish it could have been longer as any contact with former school mates was only superficial at best. I would have liked more time to visit with more people. I hope that some one organizes another one some time soon. I can be reached at 604-420-2624, or robinjross at telus dot net
