Rodney's Story
After FHS I went to Mt. Wachusett for a year, and was drafted during Winter break. I was sworn into the military on 12-04-1967. I chose to enlist rather than to wait for the draft. By doing so, I was able to choose my branch of service as well as the particular section of the military. I decided to go into the Seabees, combat construction.
After construction and combat training, I went to Vietnam just in time for the ending of the Tet offensive. After that tour of duty, I returned to the States & was billited in Gulfport, MS. It was at this time that I first experienced a catagory 5 hurricane, Camille. After the hurricane I had to have several surgeries to 'fix' injuries from both the hurricane and Vietnam. When the surgeries were done and I had recouperated, I again was sent to Vietnam, for my second tour of duty there.
My 4th year of enlistment was spent developing and conducting a 'drug awareness' class. I ended my enlistment in Gulfport.
I was to later experience more catagory 5 hurricans, Katrena, and Ike. In all those storms the eye of the storm passed right over me. I was in the worse location, but again survived. After Katrena I worked for a week with the American Red Cross, helping out the refugees comming out of New Orleans, to Houston.

many other veterans I had a hard time adjusting to being a civilian again. Without my M-16 & .45, I felt as though I had lost an appendige. I rode a motorcycle and raised hell with a few kindred souls.
Tiring of living in a sort-of wild life,I customed a '65 Ford Econoline Van, and set off cross country looking for peace in my life. Since the year at that time was 1976, the bicential year of America, I thought that it was a good time to see small town America. I visited forty states in all. I had an epifany one morning when the sunrise slowly illuminated the Grand Canyon. It was time to go home. I turned back East, and did not stop untill I was back in Massachusetts.
I was the Founder and men's outreach director for the Montachusett County.
In time I work with Vets regarding disability, medical treatment, interaction with their family and much more. With other Vets, we successfully established the very first store-front Veterans Center in the Nation. State funding came only after we worked without compensation for three years. We named our center 'The Montachusett Veteran's Outreach Center' and located it in Fitchburg. At this same time, I enrolled in Fitchburg State University, and earned a Bachelors degree in Electronic Engineering.
