Rock (Roderick Lee)'s Story
The above pictures show I've gone from a one horsepower ride to a four hundred horsepower ride! Life has been good for me! By the way, The first picture was taken up in the Traverse City, Michigan area adjacent to Long Lake. The 'Vette picture is out in the Medical Lake, Washington area.. That was my retirement gift to myself!
I attended 13 different schools before graduating from Portage HS in May 1961. I remember only having a very few close friends at any of those schools, if at all, so you probably never got to really know me as I was mostly a loner and bitter, because of moving so much. My loss, I'm sure. If you do remember me, please reach out, I'd like to hear from you! My birth name is Roderick Lee, over the years I've gone by Roddy, Rodney, Rod and now as a senior citizen I am, Rock... I’ve been to all of our fifty United States including WA DC and lived in nine of the states. My Dad's career was working in Industrial Construction, so we moved quite often during my elementary and high school years. After graduating HS, I attended Indiana University NW campus starting in Sept 1961 for one semester, that definitely wasn't for me, so dropped that! In Mar 1962 enrolled in a four-year Boilermaker Apprenticeship at U.S. Steel Corp's Sheet and Tin Mill in Gary, IN. which was administered and accredited by Purdue University NW. Then In Oct 1962 married my PHS girlfriend. In the spring of 1964 my wife and I had an opportunity to purchase the local Beauty Salon where she had been working. I received my Structural Engineering and 'Boilermaker Journeyman’ degree in Dec 1965. Life seemed very good then. I had my College Degree and a great job. we owned a very successful Beauty Salon. In Aug 1966 my life crashed when we divorced! So, in Oct 1966, single and no more college deferment and of course, with US Steel's sincere recommendation (in order to avoid the imminent military draft into the U.S. Army). I was to fulfill my initial 4yr enlistment and...Expand for more
return with full benefits within 90 days having an Honorable Discharge. So, at age 23 I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War era {that was a life changer for me} and actually spent the next 40 years serving with the USAF (23yrs active duty followed by 17yrs USAF Logistical Support Contractor), visiting 11 different countries, spending 10 of those years in Japan and 2 yrs in Thailand/Vietnam. While living in Japan I married Setsuko (Setz) and we've been together now for over 56 great years. I enjoyed the USAF life much more than the NW Indiana environment, so selected not to return to my “guaranteed” U.S. Steel position.. That was actually a God Given Blessing for me as that plant closed 6 years after I left for the USAF. In Dec 2006 I completely retired at Fairchild AFB, WA. and now live in what I consider, God's Country, the Pacific NW, Medical Lake, eastern WA ! I still enjoy traveling around our great USA and visiting with 'old' friends along the way. I've been an avid NASCAR fan ever since my Bunnell Elementary and Mainland HS days in Daytona Beach and Bunnell with stock car racing exposures back in the 1950's. I still enjoy traveling to many of the NASCAR and other racing tracks. Living in Bunnell, Florida are my best memory years. I was in the Boy Scouts for 2 years reaching the 'Life' level and 2 years in the Royal Ambassadors of the First Baptist Church. Baptized in Lake Neoga in summer of 1955. I am a Southern Baptist and a Conservative Republican.
So! Let’s stay in touch! We are all approaching or already over 83 years old now (statically older than the average adult life) and our groups are naturally passing on! I hold no hard feelings or grudges toward anyone concerning my past school yard grievances, or other experiences. Each new day is a Blessing from God, let's fully enjoy them and hopefully share our life experiences and stories with each other…Have a great day! Looking forward to hearing from you soon...... Rock
