Roderic's Story
April 2012: I feel very proud of my children, David (41; software designer and jazz pianist extraordinaire) and Jon (39, musician, artist, and entertainer extraordinaire), both environmental activists trying to make a difference in the world. I retired in 2007 after 37 years as a research scientist (radio physicist and climatologist, with a PhD in electrical engineering from UBC), manager, and "scientific diplomat" with the Communications Research Centre, Industry Canada. I am now working full time at my own expense as an epidemiological researcher mathematically modeling disease and various measures of population wellness and stress, and gradually writing this up for publication. This came about after accidentally seeing the atmospheric climatology in some of the US cancer data after discovering that I was vitamin-D deficient and knowing that I had been for 15 years. d 2000's, and without about 16 pivotal people in my life over the years.
I am also fortunate to have two lovely grandchildren (Gina, 8, and Jake, 11 months), two fine daughter's-in-law (Irene, from Italy, and Alma, from Mexico), and a still family-oriented although estranged wife who is also trying to make a difference in the world as a teacher.
My teachers at Refnrew School (Miss Livingston, Miss Guinan, Mrs. Wood, Mr. Tetlock, Miss MacFarlane, and Mr Terrance) made a significant difference. So did my later teachers at Vancouver Tech, most notably Dave Hart in the electrical department. I was very fortunate. I hope some of them are still alive and can see this.
Recreations, etc.: Canoeing, camping, cross-country skiing, cycling, the latter two, to and to/from work in many past years. Traveling, which included living in France for two years. TV news and world affairs junkie. Have difficulty getting enough music in my life, but having two musician sons has helped a lot.
