Rodger's Story
After graduation from San Pedro High School in 1969, I spent the summer in Japan. In September I started classes at L.A. Harbor Jr. College. In 1970 I transferred to L.A. City College. I attended Cal State Univ. L.A. for the 2 years graduating in 1973.
After graduation it was time to go back to Tokyo. I lived there for 1 year. When I returned to L.A. in 1974, the economy was not that good, so I went back to Fedco La Cienega where I had worked part time during my Cal State Univ. L.A. days. After working a year I decided to pursue a career in travel and moved to Honolulu. I worked in a Japanese travel agency as a ground handler of groups from Japan.
In 1977 I had had enough of the Waikiki life and needed a break. I decided to go to New York City for the first time. It was fantastic. After the blackout of July, 1977, I knew this was an exciting city! haha. I worked in another Japanese agency, this time in the office handling ground arrangements, hotel, bus, etc. for incentive groups from Japan. In 1979 it was time to come back home to L.A. Guess the winters didn't suit me that well.
I started my airline career with Pan American World Airways in 1979. It was a fabulous 6 years travelling all around the world. In 1985 the Pan Am L.A. reservations office was closed. My next airline was United Airlines. I worked in the international rate desk. It was rather boring ...Expand for more
and I wanted something different. I then took a city ticket office position with All Nippon Airways(ANA). I worked in downtown L.A. for 3 years. In the summer of 1989 I started with my last airline, Northwest Airlines as an on board service manager.
I enjoyed the life style of not going to work Mon-Fri, but sometimes the longer (7 days) trips got tiring. However in November of 1992 that all came to an abrupt end. My entire department (management) was layed off just before Thanksgiving.
Almost overnight I found my self working in the order department of Herbalife! I needed a job right away and that was the first thing that came along. This temporary job(or so I thought at the beginning) lasted 3 years. My the mid 90's it was time to go back in the travel industry. This time I became a travel agent, first for a Japanese travel agency in Little Tokyo, and then at another agency in Century City.
In 1999 I joined a corporate travel agency near Fairfax high School. I was with this company thru 3 mergers and then in 2006 went to work at Sony Pictures Entertainment in Culver City.
I am active in my Parish, Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Beverly Hills.
After 7 years as a corporate travel consultant with Sony, I retired from the professional travel world.
Glad to say as of September, 2013, I am happily retired and living in the Miracle Mile District of Los Angeles.
