Rodney's Story
Life & Death
Upon H.S. graduation, I attended Fullerton J.C. for two years and then enlisted in the Marine Corps. I spent 4 years on Active Duty and went to Okinawa, Vietnam, and the Philippines. I joined the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. in 1969 and retired at the rank of Sergeant in 1999. In 1974 I joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and was actived in Jan. of 1991 and sent to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Storm. I retired from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1994 at the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9). I earned by B.A. degree at the University of La Verne in 1978 and obtained my Limited Service Teaching Credential from The California Community Colleges - State of California as well. I also attended the Law Enforcement Specialist Class at the F.B.I. Academy in Quantico, VA in 1976. I'm a firearms instructor and a professional photographer. I played the title role of "Cap'n Andy" (a children's Christian television program) on TBN from 1971 - 1981.
I'm been married to my wife, Karen, since May of 1968 and we have one child, Tiffany, who was born in May of 1987....yeah, it was later in life, but VERY planned! My wife and I live together in Anacortes, Washington and are loving every minute of it. I am currently involved in activities of the local Baptist Church as well as being a member of Gideons International. Our Daughter, Tiffany, got married in 2006.
On June 5, 2013, my wife of 45 years died 3 weeks after being diagonosed with 4th Stage stomach cancer. I now live alone in our home .
On July 6th, 2014 I married again. My new wife's name is Linda and she's from Des Moines, Iowa. We living in my home in Anacortes, Washington where we are still in the "getting settled and organized" stage. We find ourselves very busy and involved with a wide variety of activities that we enjoy together. Also, we have joined the "Somewhere In Time" event which is held at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan each year which celebrates the movie with the same name and the member/participants dress in 1890-1910 apparell for the three day get together. Currently, I'm involved with the Fraternal Order of Police Association, The Marine Corps League, Advisory Board of our local Salvation Army Organization, our Baptist Church weekly community meal ministry program known as the Kitchen Table as well as enjoying photography, firearms and range shooting. College
Upon graduating from high school I attended Fullerton J.C. for two years and then joined the Marine Corps. Six years later I obtained my A.A. degree in Small Business Management at E.L.A Community College. I later attended the University of La Verne where I earned my B.A. in Public Administration in 1978. I also attended the first Law Enforcement Specialist Class at the F.B.I. Academy in Quantico Virginia in 1976 under the auspices of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Program. In 1985 I earned my Limited Teaching Credential for the California State Community Colleges from Los Medanos College.
Workplace
I entered the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in September of 1969. Following graduation from the Sheriff's Academy I was assigned to the Men's Central Jail where I worked for nearly two years. From there my assignments were as follows:
*Civil Division - Main Office.
*Research & Development Bureau.
*Management Staff Services Bureau.
*Executive Planning Council Staff Unit.
*Norwalk Patrol Station
*Court Services Division - Central
*Court Services Division - West Bureau
*Court Services Division - East Bureau
I retired in May of 1999 at the rank of Sergeant after nearly 30 years of service.
Military
I entered the U. S. Marine Corps on September 14, 1965 and went through boot camp at MCRD San Diego. I went through Infantry Training at Camp Pendleton and then went off to Hawk Missile School at Red Stone Arsenal. In April of 1966 I was assigned to Btry D, 1st LAAM Bn at MCB 29 Palms until my assignment overseas on April 19, 1967. I was first sent to Okinawa and served with H&SCo, ProvServBn, 9thMAB and attended Vietnamese Terminology School at Camp Butler before being sent to Vietnam. Once in Vietnam I was assigned to Special Landing Force "Bravo" as part of Command Task Group 79.5. I also had visits to the Philippines during my tours. I completed the last of my four years of active duty in Los Angeles at the Armed Forces Entrance and Examining Station before being released from active duty in September of 1969. I joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in July of 1974 and was assigned to a Military Police Unit at MCAS El Toro for two years. Following that assignment I was assigned to the Air Intelligence Section of MAG-46 at MCAS El Toro. In January of 1991 I was placed on active duty and sent to Saudi Arabia as part of Operation Desert Storm. Upon arrival I was assigned to 2nd SRIG, II MEF in Al Jubail where I served as a Watch Chief in the G-2 SCIF. Upon completion of my active duty in Saudi Arabia, I returned to my Reserve position at MCAS El Toro where I was promoted to Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9) and appointed as Intelligence Chief for MAG-46 Operations. I retired in July of 1994.
