Rodney's Story
LOOK FOR UPDATES AT END, BELOW
I am in the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) and serve in the Army Reserve.
After high school, I went to the University of Virginia until enlisting in the Marine Corps in March of '66. I was commissioned a Second Lieutenant at Marine OCS in Dec '67 and finally achieved my ultimate goal when I went to flight school at Pensacola in '70, earning my Naval Aviator wings in '71. I was assigned to fly Cobra helicopter gunships and was stationed at New River Marine Corps Air Station in NC, showed the Cobra at airshows and fairs all over the Southeast, did a 6-month Mediterranean Cruise in â72 and a military exercise in the Caribbean in â73, then was transferred to Okinawa in â74.
I came to Hawaii in '75, flying Cobras and Hueys at the Kaneohe MCAS, got out in '79, and stayed because I love it here! I sold insurance for about 10 years, and joined the HFD in '88.
I had joined the Hawaii Army National Guard in '84, and flew Army Cobras until they were retired in '95, then transferred to the Army Reserve, from which I am assigned to tours of active duty--I was on a tour from January to July this year (2002) at CINCPAC HQ, Camp Smith, overlooking Pearl Harbor, and was ordered to the Army Reserve Personnel Center in St Louis, MO for three weeks in September.
I worked on Magnum P.I. from its first season (1980), starting as an extra, working up to bit parts, stand-in, and photo/stunt double. I worked on whatever movies/TV shows filmed here: Hart-to-Hart; TJ Hooker; Murder She Wrote; Hawaiian Heat; Tour of Duty; Raven; Godzilla; Fantasy Island; Honolulu CRU; the new Hawaii 50; Punch Drunk Lov...Expand for more
e; and had a speaking part in "War and Remembrance". I worked five weeks as the stand-in for the male lead in "Black Widow".
I have been eligible to retire from the HFD since turning 55, but will stay at least five more years to make the pension better (since I was already 43 when I joined), and I will be eligible for my military pension to start at age 60.
UPDATE--8/31/2005--I retired from the military as an Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 on May 22, my 60th birthday, a week after marrying Marie, whom I have known since 1996. I am still with the HFD, probably for 5-10 more years.
UPDATE--6/20/2010--I was promoted to the rank of Captain in the Honolulu Fire Department, finally regaining the rank I held when I left the Marine Corps 31 years ago. Sorry to see LOST end--I worked on it from time to time during its run. Hoping the new HAWAII 5-0 makes it!
UPDATE-1/1/2015-I retired from the Honolulu Fire Department on December 31, 2014, after 26.5 years of service. My last assignment was as the Community Relations Officer of the HFD. Adding four years of military service (the maximum that we are allowed to buy), I ended up with 30.5 years for retirement purposes. So now I've retired twice--the other being after more than 34 years of military service (13+ active duty USMC and 21+ Army NG and Reserve). Now I'm trying to get my head around turning 70 this year!
