Roger's Story
After spending a year at Leelanau, I attended Albion College, where I met my future wife, Denise Carty. I later earned a graduate degree in geology from the University of Michigan. In 1979, we moved to Houston, Texas, where I worked in the petroleum industry for eight years and Denise worked as a CPA. Denise and I married in 1982. Wanting to get out of an extractive industry, we relocated to Portland, Oregon, in 1987, where I switched careers to environmental consulting. a ride I looked forward to every day, rain or shine. I worked for the same small local consulting firm for 35 years before fully retiring in 2025. Denise retired from her CPA practice a few years back, and we're both thoroughly enjoying retirement. While we don't have grandchildren yet, our first child's wedding is coming up in the summer of 2026, so there’s hope!
While I only spent one year at Leelanau, it was a transformative year for me, with many good memories. I loved the area so much I ended up working a couple summers at The Homestead. Unfortunately, I have not been back to the area in over 35 years – hope to make a journey back at some point.
