Roger's Story

Update: 131202 Hard to believe it's been four years since my last update. I decided to save and just add to it so I have a place of reflection and see where I'm going based on where I've been..... Well, I returned from Okinawa, Japan in May 2011 to begin the last leg of my Marine Corps journey, and what a final end to a great career it is turning out to be. I have a retirement date of 1 Novemember 2014. Only eleven months left and it will be time for me to growup. I have had many ups and downs, but no matter what, I feel I come out on the other side a much better man. Ups? My daughter graduated high school and is in college now. My son continues to mature into a strong responsible young man learning from his own mistakes (sometimes it hurts to watch, but I couldn't be more proud of him). Now I know how my own Dad felt when I wouldn't listen to him. hehe. Downs? This past July, my Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer and thirty days later passed away. As sad as it is not having him around, this was a down that truely was an up.... This sounds cliche, but I didn't realize all the differant facets of my Father; a mentor, a friend, a brother, an uncle, a business man, a handy man, a man of God, and many others. He is in a better place, "rest in peace Dad." So what is in store for the future beyond the Marine Corps? We'll see what h...Expand for more
appens. Roger Update 091129 Upon graduation from high school, I went to basic training for the Army. Unable to complete the training, I moved to ND and attended college for one year. It was during this time I was able to enlist in the Marine Corps. I reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego in Nov, 1984 and have been in the Corps ever since. I have had the pleasure of serving all over the world, seeing and doing things that most people only dream of. From the Rock of Gibralter to the Vatican and St Peters Basilica, from being north of the artic circle in Norway to south of the equator in the jungle of the Phillippines and the elevations of Afghanistan. I returned from Afghanistan almost a year ago. It was quite the experience. Now I find myself back in Okinawa Japan. I can hardly believe I have been in the Marine Corps 25 years. At present, this is as good as any place to finish my career as anywhere else. I have two wonderful children; a son working on his third year of college and a daughter enjoying High High. I have a wonderful wife that has supported my career and allowed me to do all that the Marine Corps has asked of me. It is not easy being a Marine Wife, but she makes it look easy. Yes, I am truely a blessed man. And when I finish my time in the Corps, I look forward to whatever the future holds. Roger
