Roger's Story

Life After high school I went to college for a little over a year. Then three years in the Army, stationed in various places in the US and in Germany. In 1970 I went back to school and got a BA in Anthropology from OSU. Several years were spent in Tennessee working on TVA dam projects and taking some graduate classes from the Univ. of Tenn. Later I moved to New Mexico to attend Eastern New Mexico Univ. and work on a number of multi-year archaeological projects. When my classwork was completed (received an MA in Anthropology) I moved to Cortez, Colorado to work for the Univ. of Colorado to work on another dam project. While there I married Susan Shelter from Chicago, whom I had met while attending ENMU. Between then (1978) and 1988: We had two daughters; I worked for the Navajo Nation for several years and then for Salmon Ruins Museum doing contract archaeology for energy development companies. In 1988 I started my own archaeological company (Moore Anthropological Research), working in most of the southwestern states. tional Park Service in Chaco Culture National Historical Park in northwest New Mexico. As the hub of the prehistoric Chaco pueblo culture with nearly 4000 sites, this park has a lot of outside research projects going on, making it an exciting place to work. Since joining the NPS I have served on several disaster relief details for FEMA. Susan & I divorced several years ago. I now have two young grandsons who often come over to play with grandpa. I get back to Ohio every few years to visit relatives. Had a good time re-connecting with old friends at the 2005 Brookhaven reunion. I still miss the fall colors and the OSU football games. I retired in 2017 from the NPS but staying busy working on several projects I did not have time to do while working and spending more time with grandsons. Since 2018 I have been spending part of my time in New Mexico and part in Florida helping my mother and doing some volunteer work for the NPS there. Big changes in 2023. My mother turned 100! Also, after being divorced 17 years, I was found by a wonderful lady. We married this summer in Florida. Never thought I would marry again, but it has been great.
