Roger's Story

Bottom line up front: I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. But here is an update as of 28 January 2019: At this juncture, 56 years after graduating from York Community High, here is what I have done with my life. I have: -continued my education and am currently a PhD candidate (Management), but I am not working on completing it. -retired from the US Navy (34 years as enlisted and officer in the Reserve and on Active Duty) at the rank of Captain (Cryptology) and a graduate of the Naval War College/Command and Staff. -become a US Coast Guard Licensed Captain and own a charter sailboat business in Florida. -served (since 2007) with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary supporting Homeland Defense/CG District 7. -taught at Indiana University (authored the textbook for my management class), University of Indianapolis (advertising), and Indiana Vocational Technical College (business math and English). -done a stint as the Hendricks County (Indiana) Flyer features editor. -actively managed my own management/financial services company for seven years; it was dissolved in 2008 after 29 years. -lived with my bride of 44 years in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Florida and Germany. -sired three offspring (two boys and a girl) who managed to stay on the right side of the law. -lived in Germany/France six years and two years in Spain, and have had discourse/interaction with the police in Spain, Czech Republic, Germany, and France. -spoken c...Expand for more
onversational French, German, and Spanish (still learning Dutch and Italian). -continued operations in amateur radio (c/s K9FRN) as a brass-pounder (Morse code operator), supporting the Waterway Radio and Cruisers Club in Florida helping cruising sailors be safe. ( My German amateur radio callsign was DA1FRN.) -reduced my fleet of sailboats to one, the MacGregor 26X. -acquired a German sailing license for the Chimsee lake. -My Marine Security Enforcement business remains the cash cow and business increases as the homeland security threat increases. My duties require me to carry a Florida statewide firearms license and I am qualified to use the .45, 9MM Kurtz, 9MM and .38 special caliber side arms. -I became a certified commercial fishing vessel examiner in October, 2015 and a passenger vessel safety examiner in June 2018 for the US Coast Guard and work that task 20 hours/month. In June 2016 I received my emergency on-board drill conductor certification for fishing vessels. Many interesting evolutions for these tasks; working with the Coast Guard is a lot of fun. I am driving a partially refurbished 1970 MGB which is a lot of fun....goes as fast as 65 MPH downhill. My current challenges are to complete a fictional novel about pirates in the Caribbean, sail the Caribbean and keep the wine cellar stocked above 181 bottles (the quantity we brought back from Europe in 2006). Check back at the 60-year York HS reunion to see how it went!
