Roger's Story
Life
My primary interests, outside of my long-standing relationship with my wife, Nancy, is helping reunite old Marine friends from my service in Vietnam. Though I feel a strong connection to the Class of 64', I quit school in the last semester of my senior year to join the Marine Corps and was in Vietnam almost a year later. I'm a proud member of the first Marine combat unit deployed to Vietnam in January, 1965. I might add, I completed my high school education in the Corps and I've accumulated a number of college credits since.
I am also working on a book about the Civil or Uncivil War. The book is primarily an in-depth study of Condederate units who were organized in the Upper Cumberland Region of Tennessee.
At the ripe old age of 57, I still look forward to each day and every rainbow I see. I also have many fond memories of times past and those I knew in both complicated and simple times. In recent years, life has become far less tiresome and far more satisfying for me. Maybe it's the fresh air here in the hills of Tennessee, or a small glimmer of wisdom finally peeking through.
If any old acquaintences want to share memories of the pre-mall era of Springfield, Ohio, just give me a tap. West-enders unite!
Military
Entered Marine Corps boot camp at MCRD, San Diego, CA, on January 29, 1964. Completed training on April 23, spent another 4 weeks at ITR, San Onofre, CA, and reported to M/3/7, 1st Marine Division at Las Pulgas, Camp Pendleton, CA, after a brief leave of absence at home.

USS W. A. Mann in San Diego on September 01, 1964, and sailed towards Okinawa on September 03, with brief stops in Hawaii and Yokohama, Japan. Upon arrival at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, the battalion was redesignated 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d Marine Division. And after participating in jungle warfare training, we again boarded ships and were sent to Camp Fuji, Japan, for cold weather training.
Two weeks short of our planned training cycle in Japan, we were returned to Okinawa and my company, Delta Company, was flown to Da Nang, Vietnam, arriving there on January 23, 1965. We served as Security Detachment for the helicopter operations flown out of the airfield in support of ARVN forces. We also took great care in reinforcing the defenses in and around the base itself in lieu of an imminent attack. I might add, at this time we were the only U.S. Marine combat force deployed in Vietnam.
On March 08, 1965, the balance of our battalion and 3d Battalion, 9th Marines began arriving at Da Nang as part of the initial buildup of U.S. forces in Vietnam. On April 08 my company relieved 3/9 atop Hill 327 and we soon began patroling the valley to our west and sw. The rest is history. We lost some good Marines and wonderful human beings along these trails and many more were hurt. I will never forget them...one and all.
