Went to Auburn but did not study too much (Aeronautical Engineering) and flunked out after 3 years. Enlisted in US Air Force in April 1962. Basic training in the heat and humidity at Lackland AFB TX in San Antonio sure was a lot of fun. Then, I went to Aviation Cadets at James Connally AFB (Class 63-22D) in Aug. Let me tell you PT at Lackland in shorts and tennis shoes was a picnic when compared to doing PT in a flight suit and boots in Waco TX in August and September !!! Received navigator wings and a commission as a 2LT. Then on to Fairchild AFB where I met my soon to be wife (and she never let me forget that she out ranked me !) 1LT Shirley Hays of Topeka, KS a nurse at the base hospital. I was there almost 2 years as a B52D navigator. Then to Tachikawa AB Japan for as a C-130A navigator. I spent 2 weeks of each month ( plus one 6 month tour) for the next 3 years TDY at Cam Ranh Bay AB, RVN. "You call, we haul". Along the way, we managed to have 2 boys while there. Then to Mather AFB at Sacramento CA for 5 1/2 years in B52G as Radar Nav or Nav. Spent 6 months TDY at U-Tapao AB, Thailand ( third son born while there ). Beware of the cobras on the warm concrete ramp at night! After that, 6 months TDY at Anderson AB on Guam (Hafa adai) 3 or 4 times.
