Roland's Story

Life A few years after high school I was hired by the Palm Springs Fire Dept. In 2005, I officially retired from the Department. I've spent 22 fun and fulfilling years in the fire service. Now, I have a couple restaurants that keep me busy. Living in Palm Desert is great. However, I do miss OC. Still have lots of friends from childhood living there. Is spend as much time as possible at our river house, just a couple hours away. Years of good business has allowed us to spend a lot of time at the river this summer. Every man needs a boat. I have a beautiful young daughter from a previous marriage. My current bride brought me another beautiful daughter, 25 years old now. Brittany in turn made me a freakin' grandpa a few years ago. Imagine that. Grandpa Roland. Although my FD career provided me and my family with a great life, it also became the reason for my early retirement. I won't get into it here, but, trust me when I say that I've seen enough and been injured enough to accept my early retirement. Hell, it's not like I got cheated, I got 22 great years from it. Do I miss it? Yup. As I write, wildfires are incinerating Southern California and my boys are out there doing what they do. Yup, I miss it. Always will. It's kind of a sickness, but, I doubt Betty Ford has a program for me. I figure that's why God made beer and gave me a river house. On a more serious note I'd like to officially (although meekly behind my computer screen)apologize to all those I hurt or embarrassed in high school. Girls c...Expand for more
ome to mind. Yes, I admit, there were times when I was a complete ass. Girls scared me. Still do in fact. Even some of the male alumni deserve a heartfelt sorry from me. So, sorry. Not that I regret my past, because I don't. After all, it's made me who I am today. Turns out I'm a helluva nice guy. Just ask me. Can't change the past, I can only laugh at my stupid self and enjoy my life. Sometimes when I think of my high school days I can't help but cringe and smile at the same time. Good times for sure. Would I do it again? Hell yeah. During my years in the FD, I'd been exposed to many life changing incidents. It's not that I'm complaining, I'm just saying. These crappy events have taught me ONE very important thing. ONE thing I live by.....Enjoy. Period. Ya never know what's around the corner. There ain't enough time in my life to be mad, sad, hurt, broken hearted or whatever. If you ever get yourself out to Palm Desert you HAVE to come by and say hey. I'd be happy to buy ya a beer. Or, if you prefer, a cosmopolitan or Appletini or whatever the drink of the week is. If your a dude, spare yourself and don't order a chick drink. I'd have no choice but to say something out loud, pissing you off again after 30 years. Not fun. If you're reading this you either (1) Remember me, or, (2) are some freak stalker. Either way, gimme a shout and lets laugh. Since 1980 I've kept in touch with a few Barons, but, there's always room for more good ones in my life. I'm rambling now. Later. Roland O. Cook
