Roland's Story

Life I went into the Navy about 6 weeks after graduation. I spent the entire time in California, Hawaii, Midway Island, and the last 6 months on the USS Pine Island AV-12, a seaplane tender. After being discharged, I met my wife on a blind date for New Years Eve and we were married 60 days later. That was 49 years ago. The only regret I have is that I wasted the 60 days. We have three chilfren, a daughter and two sons. They have given us eight grandchildren. I am an ordained minister, and was the associate minister and administrator at our church. My wife was the church secreatary. The church closed down in June of 2002. The pastor is going into the foreign fields. We presently go to Lindale Assembly of God Church, where my wife sings in the choir, I schedule the workers for the Information Booth, IO am on the board for the men's ministry and we both are involved in the leadership of the "Prime Timers" group, which is the ministry for the more mature people in our congreation. We still live in north Houston. At the present, I am the archivist for our class of 1952 from Reagan High School. I try to keep the address information up to date. Plus there are still some of our classmates that I have not been able to contact during the 6 years I have been at this project. So, if any of you know of any of our classmates, either send me the information or check with them to find out if I have been able to contact them. School At Reagan I did not get to be involved in most of the activities related to school. I worked at the Airline Drive-Inn Theater from May of 1950 to September of 1951. That meant that 6 evenings a week, I was at work and was not able to have any night off except for Monday to Thrusday. So, again I had to miss all of the sport activity. Then my senior year, I took Distributive Education. So again I was not able to get ihnvolved. Most of any involvement I had with classmates was at Saint Mark's Methodist Church. I took ROTC for the first two years. This is what enabled me to later take DE. I was not one of the top students in school, but I did manage to graduate. The General Electricity course I took at Reagan, enabled me the pass the Navy's Electronic Technician Test. This assured me of being able to go to the Navy Class "A" Electronic Technician School after I finished Boot Camp. So, I did get something out of school after all. Workplace From June 1950 to Augusst 1951 I worked at the Airling Drive Inn Theater. Starting with school in 1951, I took DE and worked at Sakowitz. I worked there after gradutation until the July 15th. This is when I went in to the Navy. After getting discharged from the Navy I worked at W.H. Curtin Chemical in the warehouse, pulling chemicals for the customer orders. I worked there until the end of January of 1957. I then went to work for Schlumberger as an Electronic Assembler. I was caught up in the very first layoff they ever had, since I was the last employee they had hired in the 10...Expand for more
months I was there. I then worked at SIE Dresser as an Electronic Assembler. I was laid off twice and called back once. Due to the econmic situation at the time I went to work at Murray Rubber Company as a trimmer. I finally went to work at Mandrel as an Electronic Assembler. I worked there for 5 years, working my way up to Leaderman, Production Planner, Engineering Techincian and being in chrage of Document Control. I was offered a position in Quality Control by United Gas Corporation Instruments. They closed after about a year. I then went to work for Mark Products, Inc. I was there for 34 years. I was hired in as a Quality Control Technician. From there I became the Lederman over the Production Department, and then Supervisor. I was then moved to a new department that was in process of being developed. This was an indicator system for Cranes. It would check the set up of the crane, the boom angle, and the weight being lifted. It was programed to set off an alarm if the crane was approaching a tip over condition. Duirng this time I was also in charge of the Military division, which made interconnect cable for the Titam 3C missiles. We crane division was sold, and our Military contact was completed. So I then was pur in charge of the Production Planners. After this I moved several times, wherever the need was. We purchased another cable company. I was there in charge of Quality Control, then Plaqnt Manager, later back there in charge of the warehouse and purchasing. In between time I was in the sales Department as and Technical Assistant to the sales force. After all of this I was Quality Control Manager, and then Engineer; Repair Department Supervisor, Fiberoptics Department Supervisor, Technical Advisor to the Military for a cable system they were developing, and finally Prodution Schedule. Two years after being bought by a French Company I and all of the other long term employees were laid off. In one week I had a job with a machine shop that was one of the vendors for Mark. I worked there for 3 years as a combination Buyer, Scheduler and Production Planner. I then retired on January 4th of 2005. Military After Boot Camp at San Diego, CA., I was sent to Treasure Island, CA. This was for Class "A" Electronics Technician School for 36 weeks. After school, I was station on Midway Island for 19 months. During my tour on Midway, I was able to befriend several Albatrosses to the extent that I could pet them on their head, and pick them up by their wings. Also, I assisted two men from Washington DC. One was form the FAA and the other from the Audubon Society. Their job was to try to find a way to correct the Albatrosse's problem of flying into the jet engines and propellers of the landing aircraft. Nothing that we tried worked. Then 6 months at Barber's Poing on Ohau, Hawaii. I spent the last 8 months on the Pine Island, AV-12, a Seaplane Tender. I was discharged in San Diego, CA. as a 2nd Class ELectronics Technician Petty Officer.
