Roland's Story
After nearly 38 years of government service and 23 years in Europe, my wife and I have been retired for over 8 years and became professional bums and travelers. I got married late in life (47) to my wife, whom I met in Germany. She spent 21 years overseas (11 in Germany and 10 in Korea). I am her third husband and she has two daughters (one from each marriage), Shane (38) and Beau (30). I never wanted any children, but I enjoy seeing my stepdaughters. I have traveled to so many places, courtesy of the Department of Defense. South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Morocco, Tunesia, Iran, Ethiopia, Bosnia, Italy, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, BENELUX countries, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Madagascar, Lesotho, Pakistan, every US State and many more. We finally took a fantastic cruise with great weather to Alaska and British Columbia this year. Never had the opportunity to go to Asia and have never been to the Caribbean, oddly enough. I will plan to travel there in my retirement. We went on a cruise to the Bahamas, Alaska and St Thomas,/Puerto Rico, finally. We also took a trip to Machu Picchu and a cruise to the Galapagos Islands, Europe is really my second home and I miss it greatly. I miss the food, the fast driving and the ability to get to different countries and terrain...Expand for more
in a matter of hours. I read, write and speak fluent German and was able to roughly converse in French. I collected a 2,000 bottle wine cellar over the years that spans over 90 years. I became a gourmet cook over the years after attending a 2 week session at the Cordon Bleu in Paris in the 70s. My wife and I enjoy attending wine tasting dinners in the DC area and holding some of our own. We built our dream home with a kickass kitchen near Annapolis in Maryland in a gated community and are spending our time working on the landscaping. I have two cats, Pinkie Lee (9 yrs old and found as a starving young mother in our house while the house was still in studs) and Woody (a Norwegian Forest Cat, 6 yrs old and born in our house). Gummi, our cat of 22 years old died 7 years ago. After working nearly 7 days a week in military financial management for most of my unmanaged career, I am enjoying life. My wife and I volunteer weekly at the National Arboretum. We also have served and still serve as Chief Election Judges in Prince George's County, Maryland since 2008. We are active in the American Wine Society, French Wine Society and the Tasters Guild. I never learned any trade skills so I have been taking courses in HVAC, Plumbing, Carpentry and Building Management at the local Community College. Tuition for old people like me is FREE.
