Ron's Story

To be honest, my high school years were the hardest times of my life. My dad died when I was 10 and my mother struggled to provide a living for herself and 3 kids. I was very shy and introverted so I didn't have a lot of friends or participate much in school. It was a miracle I graduated. After high school I worked a while at Texas Instruments and at Mercantile Bank in downtown Dallas. Then in December 1974, a life changing event occurred when I joined the U.S. Navy. It's true that joining the military can change a boy into a man, and in my case this was certainly true. The Navy was a maturing experience and much of what I learned from my experiences during my enlistment I still use today. In 1979 my enlistment was up. The Navy made me a generous offer to re-enlist. However, I had gotten married while in the Navy and I didn't feel it was fair to my wife to be left alone while I spent extended time on sea duty. So I turned down the re-enlistment offer and we packed our bags and moved back to Garland, Tx. Upon our return to Texas, I got a job at Varo, which made power systems and night vision goggles for the military. We also bought our fi...Expand for more
rst house for $34,500 (I paid more than that for our last car). I worked for Varo for 2 years when I received an offer from Xerox Corporation in Dallas. I accepted that position and worked there for 36 years before retiring as an IT Engineer in 2017. During my lifetime we have been blessed with the opportunity to travel a lot. In my 30's and 40's we called Walt Disney World our second home. In my 50's and 60's we spent a lot of time on cruise ships and got to visit many countries in the world. From those experiences, along with my previous travels, I gathered an extensive library of photos and movies, many of them on film, slides and 8mm movies. Today in 2020, I live in Rowlett and spend most of my time working around the house, creating music in my home recording studio, and trying to digitize 40 years of pictures and home movies. We have 1 son and 1 granddaughter who currently live in San Marcos. Although I did not patronize a lot with my fellow class mates in high school, I still remember many of them. If you graduated from W.W. Samuel in 1973 and you should happen to remember me, send me a note and perhaps we can get reacquainted..
