Ron's Story
Grew up on Tyler Ave near Rio Hondo Elementary but attended Annunciation for grade school and went to LaSalle HS in Pasadena for my freshman year. Transferred to Arroyo in '61. Was on the football team ( Coach Dillon) and took college prep courses. My brothers Jim and Bob were at Arroyo with me and my sister Kathy went through later ('68). Went to CalStateLA majoring in psychology from '64-'68. Spent the next few years working several different interesting but not very lucrative jobs:
cabinet-fitter at Silver Streak Trailers
an Art Film theatre on the Sunset Strip.
finishing fine furniture for a master craftsman.
building adobe houses in New Mexico.
plastering ferro-cement yachts
record store salesclerk
killed termites for Terminex
made wooden toys
Then back to school at PCC in the Communications Dept. In a few months I was working there and eventually the opportunity came to work in television. I am now retired after 34 years with NBC in Burbank.

While at PCC I met and married my first wife Laurie. We were only together about 3 years and divorced in '77. My second wife, Katie and I were together for 28 years until her death in '04. Laurie and I have since remarried and we now live in Glendale.
I worked in news for most of my time at NBC. The last several years, I did photography, editing and remote live shots on breaking news stories. I operated and drove microwave vans and satellite trucks. I enjoyed this work and the people I worked with.
The business has gone through many changes during my career and I was always able to adapt. The thing that is happening now is a shrinkage of the audience and the revenue stream, creating pressure to downsize. This means that the number of jobs for news photographers in LA is probably 40-50% less than even 2 years ago. I am happy to have been there when it was exciting and fun. It's less fun now.
I have family and friends and projects to keep me busy, and I'm grateful for pretty good health.
