Ron's Story

Life Life in Revere was a great experience and the people I met helped to make me what I am today. I wonder if they will all agree? Worked in Boston while going to Boston College Intown school - that means nights.. A friend made some phone calls and lo and behold I was a February Freshman on the Chestnut Hill. This was great, but still unsure of what to do. So at the end of the sophomore year entered the USMC for two years. Upon completion of my active duty stint, I sort of goofed of for a year, but decided to return to BC. I stayed in the reserves, with the thought of returning to the Corps as an officer. Thought Psychology would be an interesting field and after three years of study graduated from Boston College. Now came the decision to return to the Marines, but since it was just before Vietnam, they didn't take blind people. Had to be able to pass a class A physical and that meant no glasses. Eventually entered the Air Force and spent time at Wurtstmith AFB, Michigan. Got married to Polly in 1964. Then it was off to Port Austin AFS, Michigan. Lisa, our first born arrived during this tour. Finally, was advised of a pending assignment to Thailand. Asked for a delay and my buddies changed the assignment to Turkey - where's that? - for a two year stint in Ankara, the capitol. Here I worked as a CBPO Quality Control Officer and squadron commander. Ron II became our newest family member. Finally, after enjoying reasonably pleasant weather, it was off to Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota, where I was involved in Missiles and the consolidated command post. Ross and Ryan joined the family during this tour. The day after I received my master's degree in counseling Psychology, we headed for Langley AFB, VA. At Langley, I was involved with the Drug...Expand for more
and Alcohol program for two years - as the Officer -in-charge - not a subject. Left, under circumstances that will be explained only in person, and became a squadron commander. After an enjoyable assignment they sent me to Duluth Minnesota to help close the base. Since I did a decent job, they wanted to send me to Rome AFB (?) NY to close that one also. But I held out for an assignment to a position created for me, at Pease AFB, after an assignment to Hanscom AFB, in Massachusetts got put astray - another interesting story - where I was the Staff Executive Officer to the Base Commander. Some funny stories here. Finally AF sent the farewell letter and 12 other Majors and I folded our tents and we went home in August 1984. Now what to do? Had several jobs in insurance and the moving industry, but we decided to stay in Dover, NH so all four kids could graduate from the same school. Then was offered a position as a National Service Officer with the Disabled American Veterans. Worked in Boston for about 16 months to complete my initial training and then spent the next 13 1/2 years in Manchester, NH. Though it was a self fulfilling job working with veterans, Polly died in Feb of ovarian cancer. Though she had some tough times, she apparently had a stroke while I was getting ready to take her to the hospital. so at least she was in my arms when she drew her last breath. I decided to do some traveling, so I retired in 2005 after 15 years. Again made the decision to stay in Dover, NH. Now volunteer as the State Adjutant. Keeps me busier than I want to be. Would rather be traveling and visiting the grandchildren. May do it anyway. May train an assistant and then I can roam and still do my thing with the DAVIN. It's been fun, wouldn't change a thing.
