Ron's Story
After Daniel Mac, it was off to U of Winnipeg for a BA (Hons) in 1974 and then U of M for a BEd. I taught PE and French in St. Vital for 15 years, during which time I got married to my wonderful wife Barb in 1980 and was blessed with my son Curtis in 1986. I had my own Judo and TaeKwon Do clubs while I was in St. Vital. In 1979 I took the Mensa test and was thrilled to be admitted to the organization.
In 1990, we moved to Maple Ridge, BC where I taught Phys Ed and Social Studies in the French Immersion program at Maple Ridge Secondary School for 20 years. Unsatisfied with retirement, I taught PE at Douglas College and later I was a prof at U of Victoria for 3 years.
Somehow, I found the time to do my Masters in Education (Coaching Studies) at U of Victoria and a PhD in Sports Pedagogy at U of Idaho. While in Maple Ridge I was head Sensei of the Golden Ears Judo Club. I competed in Judo at the World ...Expand for more
Masters’ Games in Brisbane, Australia in 1994.
I was interested in flying so I obtained my Commercial Pilot License with Instrument and Flight Instructor ratings and worked weekends and summer holidays for local flight schools teaching people to fly. With 2 other pilots we bought our own aircraft, a Cessna Cardinal (177RG) and based it in Pitt Meadows.
Currently Barb and I live in North Saanich, BC (on Vancouver Island). I got my 6th Dan black belt in Judo and also have a 2nd Dan in TaeKwon Do, although I haven’t practiced Judo since Covid and a lot longer for TaeKwon Do. Instead, I do Dog Agility with my Miniature Australian Shepherd, Sophie. We have been fortunate to have been the #1 team in Canada 4 of the last 5 years in the Agility Association of Canada rankings. She is currently (Feb. 1, 2025) the second most successful dog of all time and is on pace to get to first overall later this season.
