Ronald's Story

Life Ron Davis has over thirty-six years of leadership experience, with a long career in the Telecommunications Industry, numerous civic roles and now a new career in Public Health. His career spans assignments in Customer Services, Call Center Management, Sales & Marketing, Corporate Network Security, Regional Training Administration, and Human Resources. He received his B. S. in Personnel Management from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a MBA from Mississippi College. He has successfully completed numerous specialized executive development programs, including: 1985 - Penn State University Executive Management Program; 1989 - Penn State University Executive Management Program Update: "The Global Business Enterprise"; 1992 ¿ the One-Year Brookings Institution "Congressional Fellows Program"; 1995 - Columbia University Senior Executive Program; and 1999 - Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Advanced HR Certificate Program. After enjoying a six year retirement from the telecommunications industry, Ron reentered the workforce in September, 2007 after much coaxing from friends and colleagues. This time around, he decided to join the rest of his immediate family in the healthcare field. His focus now is not in maximizing profits, defining strategies to win market share or effectively merging once competing companies. But rather, today he is using his cumulative body of knowledge and skills to help revitalize the Mississippi State Department of Health and to help its employees successfully battle the myriad health issues confronting the citizens of our state. Career Highlights: In May 1998, Ron was appointed the Human Resources Director - for the North America Sales Region for Lucent Technologies' Service Provider Network Group, Parsippany, NJ. He led the team of human resources professionals supporting Lucent's most prolific sales organization which produced sales of over $21Billion annually. He supervised the delivery of the full array of Human Resources support functions for the division¿s President and the organization¿s five corporate officers, and twenty-seven executives. He served as the senior consultant to the organization¿s leadership team on all strategic and operational issues related to human resources. Ron was responsible for planning and executing the Human Resources components of Lucent¿s aggressive Strategy for Growth in North America, focusing on the strategic influences of human resource plans and decisions on key business imperatives. He moved to perform a similar role for Lucent Worldwide Services in April 2001. On July 14, 2001, Ron was one of 8500 Lucent employees to accept a voluntary early retirement enhancement offer. Prior to moving back into HR, Ron was Managing Sales Director, Lucent Technologies - Government Solutions and Network Systems, Greensboro, NC. In that role, he led and managed, with Profit & Loss accountability, the Federal Government and Private Network Exchange Customer Market Units (CMU). The CMUs were responsible for sales, system configurations, pricing, ordering, bid and proposal preparation, technical consultation, and technical customer presentations on the total complement of Network Systems products and services. He consistently led his team to over achievements and improved profitability. He was a member of the Network System Sales Achievers Club from 1994 - 1998. In 1992, Ron was named a Brookings Institution Congressional Fellow, in the United States Senate, Washington, D. C... ponsored by Brookings Institution, which addressed contemporary social, economic, political, and foreign policy issues. As a fellow, he also served as an assistant to U. S. Senator Thomas A. Daschle of South Dakota. Some of Ron's earlier assignments were: District Network Security Manager - AT&T Corporate Security, Warren, N. J. & Roswell, GA. He led diverse teams responsible for protecting the AT&T Switched Network¿s revenue stream from fraudulent access. Directed Corporate Security's customization of network fraud prevention, detection, deterrence and revenue recovery programs, and services worldwide. District Manager - AT&T Network Operations Education & Training, Atlanta, Georgia. Directed the technical training delivery organization that supported the Southern & Central Regions, Network Services Division (NSD). District Manager - Customer Services Support Operation, Birmingham, and Atlanta. Directed the around-the-clock CPE installation and repair service support operations and call centers, covering the nine Southern Region states. District Manager - Installation and Maintenance, South Central Bell, Jackson, MS. Led several different I/M District configurations. Managed the complete Services (CPE, local and intercity) operations in Mississippi, including repair service bureaus and I/M services for all SCB and AT&T product/service offerings. Manager - Management Employment, South Central Bell, Jackson, MS. Directed and coordinated all management hiring, promotions and assessment evaluations for South Central Bell's Mississippi based operations. Sales Manager - Commercial Marketing, South Central Bell, Jackson, MS. Managed a team of communications consultants that sold to the small- and medium-size business enterprise markets in central Mississippi. Ron was the first African American hired into a management position with South Central Bell in Mississippi. His past civic & professional activities have included: Board of Managers, Family Service of Morris County, Morristown, NJ; The Society for Human Resources Management; Executive Committee - Forum for International Irregular Network Access; President, Board of Directors, Jackson (Mississippi) Urban League; Board of Director, Metropolitan YMCA, Jackson, Mississippi; Board of Trustees, Jackson, Mississippi Public School System; Board of Directors, Hinds County (MS) Mental Health Association; Board of Directors, Hinds County (MS) Girls Scouts of America; Vice President, Board of Directors, Farish Street YMCA, Jackson, MS; Board of Directors, Hinds County (MS) Human Resources Association; President, Graduate Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Jackson, MS; Vice President & President, Mississippi College Placement Association; Southern Illinois Alumni Association (Life Membership); and Grammateus, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. He has also been a member of the Vestry Committee at numerous Episcopal Churches, as he and his family moved around the country and is currently the Senior Warden at St. Mark¿s Episcopal Church in Jackson. Ron currently resides in Ridgeland, MS and is married to Tinny B. (Jones) Davis, a Registered Nurse with the University of Mississippi Medical Center¿s Cancer Institute. They have two children; Dr. R. Prince Davis II and Tracye B. Davis. Prince is a graduate of Stanford University (B.S., Biological Sciences) and Harvard University Medical School and is now an Ophthalmology Fellow at the Bascom-Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. Tracye is a graduate of Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas (B.S. Biology) and Washington University of St. Louis, MO (Masters in Healthcare Administration). Tracye is the Staff Assistant to the Director of the Veterans Administration¿s North Texas Health Care System in Dallas, TX.
