Ronald's Story

Joined the Marines, immediately after graduation from Gahr High, in Cerritos, CA, in 1967. Went to the 'Nam straight away. Saw a lot, did a lot, survived. Came home, with a hat full of medals and ribbons. Was released from active duty, as a Marine Corporal, transferred to the Army Reserve, in the same rank. In civilian life, I immediately became a Police Officer, in Seal Beach, CA. Transfered to Los Angeles Police Dept. Transfered to Pasadena Police Dept. Transfered to El Cajon Police Dept, in San Diego County. Opted out of Law Enforcement. Went back to college at San Diego State U, to major in History & Education. Transfered to Long Beach State U. Advanced two ranks, to Staff Sergeant, in the Army Reserve. Graduated as a teacher, in 1981. Received a commission in the Army Reserve, as a 2nd Lieutenant. Substitute taught from 1979, through 1981. Obtained regular teaching position at Gahr High, for three years. Transfered to LA City Schools. Taught 9th Grade World History and Geography, at Charles Drew Junior High, in Watts. Survived rather nicely. Was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Accepted teaching position at an International School in Manila, Philippines, in 1987. Played in the Philippines for the next six years. Was promoted to the rank of Captain while there. Departed the Philippines in 1993, to attend a year long Army Command and Staff Officer's school in California. Graduated from the course. Returned to the South Pacific, this time, to a small tropical island, called Saipan. I was promoted to the rank of Major. Went back to law enforcement. I accepted a position as a Deputy Marshal, and spent the next 15 years there, sandwiching military assignments and deployments (like Bosnia, in 2000), with my civilian government job. My last position, before civilian retirement, was with the State Attorney General's Office, as a Criminal Investigator. From Saipan, I spent some months in Malaysia, then lived for six months in Belize, in Central America, then awhile in Puerto Rico, then for a year on the island of Guam. I reached mandatory retirement age for the Army, and...Expand for more
retired as a Major, with 38 years of service. I watched my pennies all those years. Never cared much for material possessions. Never drank or smoked. Put all my pennies in high interest accounts. The accounts earned interest. That interest earned interest, and so on, in a snowball effect. Now, I'm a card-carrying bum, more or less, kicking back, and watching my retirement checks roll in each month, while having all medical needs and desires fulfilled by Uncle Sam . I have been truly blessed, by the Lord! (Not a day goes by that I do not thank Heavenly Father for directing me towards the military, and encouraging, and enabling me to stay until mandaory retirement age). I am presently back in California, living alone in Hesperia, San Bernardino County. Arrived near the end of March 2012. I will be here until at least the time of our reunion, in 2013. (Update: Until at least the end of the 2015-2016 School year). I volunteer with the California Cadet Corps Program, of which I was a member in high school. I currently hold the position of Assistant S-5 (Civic, Public, and Military Affairs Officer), for the program, on the State Staff, headquartered at Camp San Luis Obispo, and wear another hat as the Special Projects Officer for our Brigade here in Victorville, composed of five schools with the program. I will probably end up retiring in a third world country - Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Panama, perhaps the Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico, hopefully returning to my previous Philippine lifestyle, with live-in maid, cook, driver, caregiver. Anyone want to visit me there? I am blessed with a five year old son, named Andre. Andre is a sweet, caring, good boy, extremely bright, and good looking. I treasure him! Update: Andre is now eight years old, and smart as a whip! I have lived a life of travel, and adventure, and fulfilled virtually every dream I ever had as a youth, in spades. That's about all there is to say right now. Like everyone our age, I have a few troubling medical problems, but nothing life threatening. Love to all, Ron
