Ronald's Story

Well, I'll start my story in the year I was born. September 1958 at Mercy Hospital. I had the unfortunate situation of being in the nursery next to a now very famous Singer. What I can tell you is she took advantage of me, and that's all I'm going to say about that! In my early years my Dad was in the Army, so we moved base to base. Then in 1967 my Dad got out of the Army. We then moved back to Bay City and lived in the South End. If anybody remembers I went to Whittier School. But then a year later we move to the westside, and my parents bought the old homestead on Dewitt Street between the two one-way streets. I started at Wenona School. That's where I started to meet a lot of my friends I still have today. That year was a great year for me. We were at Mr. Hot Dog on South Broadway listening to my Dad's Radio in his new 1968 Red Ford Galaxie 500 XL when the Tiger won the World Series . My hero growing up was Al Kaline, Mr. Tiger they don't make them like that anymore! Then in 1969 I played baseball at the Southwest Little League, I wore my hero's number 6 and played for the Newcor Business and had Mr. Roger Phelps (Jay's Dad ) and Mr. Wayne Jebb was the assistance Coach. I learned a lot from those two gentlemen. We won the Minor league title that year and it was great. As Fall of 1970 rolled around it was a new awaking for me. I jumped to Junior High and went to Adam Kolb. That's where we had one of the most influential persons in my life! The none other than Mr. Edmond Borgioli the Principal at Kolb. He was a tough but fair Principal. You didn't get out of line with his leadership, he ran a tight ship. ( too bad we can have people like this anymore. ) We wouldn't have most of the problems we have in schools now....Expand for more
If I remember right Bay City didn't pass the millage that year and my home room teacher was the none other then the famous Gordy Taylor. He was a bumped Gym teacher now teaching the 6th grade. And again, if I remember right one of the only things, I remember about old Gordo he once said if any of you boys tease the girls it must mean you like them. Again, trying to think back 50 years I remember when we had pool class, I tell people that 6 grade and maybe 7 grade the school system didn't have enough money to buy us bathing suits so we were all naked as a jaybird. We had split pool time where the boys would go one day and the girls the next! I tell people that now and they don't believe me. The next year 7th grade I had the art teacher for home room. I think his name was Mr. Krance ( most likely not spelled right.) My first real hippie teacher. I really don't remember much else from 7th grade except on Friday's after we eat lunch, we had dances. And I was terrified, there was this crazy red head girl that also would always ask me to dance. And I would try to hide from her! I think her first name was Patty. Next came 8th grade the final year at Kolb. Most I can remember is I was on the track team and ran the 880-yard relay. And like always Kolb the old Blue and Gold ( Michigan ) most of the time won the City championships. But I will never forget we were at the City championship it was the last race that day and Terry Watkins drop the baton and we lost the championship. Where are you now Terry! That fall we went to High School, and because they passed the millage a couple years before Western High School opened that fall and half of the kids went there while the rest of us went to Old T.L. Handy. ( To be continued )
