Ron's Story

Life My Spouse I met Judy in Portugal, while teaching for the DoD. We both taught school overseas for 12 years in Portugal, Japan, Germany and England. Our son, Eric was born in Japan. We came back to San Antonio in 1978 where I taught school at Roosevelt and Taft. I taught math at both schools. I retired from teaching (38 years) in May, 2001. My Pets I have a dog, Benjamin Franklin (Ben, a 8 year old Chocolate Lab). but he is a gentle "Ben". We also have a eight year old cat that adopted us named Betsy Ross. We acquired another Chocolate Lab who is 3 years old now and her name is Dolley Madison (just Dolley to us). She's giving Ben lots of exercise. My Kids Eric is an areospace engineer, currently working for Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth. He is married and has 9 (yes, NINE) kids from the ages of 10 to 18. It's a long story. but they do visit us often at the lake and it is a blast. His wife is Stacey. I have a 63 year old jeep that I treasure and drive whenever the weather permits (doesn't have a top). We live at Medina Lake, Texas about 45 minutes from San Antonio, Texas. I'm a computer nerd now. Known around the lake as Pirate Bird. I'm in the process of taking all our home movies we made while traveling around the world and converting them to DVDs. So far, so good. In 2004 I had to have a quintuple by-pass surgery, but I've recovered completely and it doesn't seem to hamper anything I want to do. School Started school in Delevan, Illinois in 1947 as my Dad was still in the Army and was assigned to the National Guard in Illinois. He retired after my 2nd grade and we moved to San Antonio, my birthplace where I entered Benjamin Franklin Elementary School in the 3rd grade. Then to Edison High School where I graduated in 1959. I first went to SAC for two years and then went to college at SWT (now called Texas State) and graduated in 1963 with a teaching degree in Social Sciences and Math. I got my Masters Degree in Sociology from Wayne State U. in Detroit via extension while I was in Germany in 1972. Renewed my math credentials by taking several classes at University of Texas at San Antonio and also took many computer programming classes there since in those days computer classes were taught by the math departments. College I remember taking a biology class at SAC with Lester Enderlin. He kept calling the professor by his first name. Later I learned that the professor loved to play pool and he and Lester were "old pool" buddies at a local place on Fredericksburg Road. While at SWT (now Texas State) one semester Ronnie Rivas and I roomed together. It was my worst academic semester. I guess we did too much other things than study. Workplace I began my work career by delivering papers for the San Antonio Light. I continued that throughout high school and my 2 years at San Antonio College. While at Southwest Texas State (Texas State, now) I worked in the college cafeteria as the "maker of ice tea". One summer I worked at a hamburger place called "Jiff's" on Fredericksburg Rd. in San Antonio for a "friend" who had me wear a clown outfit for 2 weeks during a sale of hamburgers for 10¢ apiece. This was August and I remember the gre...Expand for more
ase paint running down my face so much that I scared all the children who came in. After graduating from SWT I began teaching at Sam Houston High School in San Antonio. During the summers I worked as a swimmiing/counselor at a boys camp near Kerrville, Texas (Camp Rio Vista) and one summer pumped gas at an Esso Station on the night shift. Then I began teaching with the DoD Dependent schools. First at Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal (where I met my future wife), then at Nile C. Kinnick High School in Yokohama, Japan for two years (YoHi). Then we traveled to Darmstadt, Germany where I taught 7 - 9 grade social studies and math for 4 years. From there we went to RAF Chicksands, England where I again taught 7 - 9 grade social studies and math for 5 years creating the Knights of the Round Table of Chicksands Order for my students., In 1978 we returned to San Antonio where I was employed as a math teacher at Theodore Roosevelt High School. In 1984 I became the chairman of the math department and in 1986 went to the central office as the computer hardware specialist. In 1988 I returned to the classroom at Roosevelt. In 1990 we moved to Medina Lake, Texas and I transferred to the math department of William Howard Taft High School which was the closest high school in San Antnio to Medina Lake. I finally retired from Taft and teaching in 2001 after 38 years of teaching. Today I do vegetable gardening (mostly tomatoes and peppers) and cut the grass after a morning reading email on the internet. I'm an Apple computer fan which makes some of my friends think I'm weird. I love doing projects on the computer like turning my VHS tapes into movies and making CDs from cassette and phonograph records. Every afternoon I go to the Medina Lake Country Club (which is just a bar) and sip a few beverages with some friends. My wife Judy doesn't seem to mind 'cause I'm "trustworthy and loyal" or as I like to say "I'm lovable". In November 2013 my lovely Judy went to heaven and I miss her dearly. In April 2014 my next best friend Ben (my chocolate lab) went to join Judy and wait for me. Recently I have acquired a Golden Retriever puppy, Teddy Roosevelt who keeps me and my lab Dolley very busy. Being alone is very strange but as they sing "I'm a survivor" and have kept busy in my garden. Now it's 2023: Nothing especially new has happened. Still have my Golden Retriever, Teddy, who has grown very large (99.8 lbs.) and not a drop of fat. Also have another Chocolate Lab (who is also huge at 93.4 lbs) as well as a cat Max. Max owns the neighborhood here at the lake. Medina lake is down to 22% full and haven't put my boat in the water for 4 years. My '47 Willlys Jeep still runs though I don't drive it as much as I originally did since I'm getting up there in age and don't like the cold very much. Getting ready to start my garden in a few weeks and grow the traditional tomatoes, jalapeños, and squash. My next-door neighbor, Barbara is stating at my house since it is one-level and hers is multilevel. We are both in our 80's.. We've been together since my wife and her husband both died a few months apart 10 years ago. Still kicking, drinking scotch and beer and computering.
