Ron's Story
MY ADVENTURE:
My direction out of high school was to enter the military and serve my country. Selected the hardest one (what a mistake), joined the U.S. Marines. First stop, basic training in San Diego. When I arrived, was screamed at and told what to do, I thought "Oh my God, what did I do"?. Trained at Camp Pendleton, CA then sent to Okinawa with 3rd Marine Division, 2nd BN 4th Marines. Arrived Sept. 1975 and relieved the Marines who evacuated Saigon when it fell. My sea adventure started on the USS New Orleans amphibious assault ship on the "Far East Tour". Trained in interesting countries like Japan, Philippines & Korea. Went through 13 typhoons during my year tour and a few bad ones. Finished remaining time at Camp Lejuene, during a 2 yr enlistment. Returned home, attended Cowley JuCo Ark City, KS. '82-'84 then to Hutchinson JuCo to start my TV career, transfer to Memphis State Univ-'86.
Pursued Photojournalism career in broadcast TV & video production. Began my professional career in Memphis for CBS affiliate in '88, early 90's then to Milwaukee. Worked in Broadcast news in 1994 then started my career with ESPN as a freelance cameraman. Couldn't...Expand for more
handle the cold climate and went to work in TV, broadcast sports in LA and Hollywood in 2000. Worked with all the TV networks in sports gaining valuable experience in my craft.
Relocated to Tampa, FL (2001) and enlisted in Navy Reserve as a Photographer/Journalist, began traveling on assignments around the world. Came back to KS in '02 working more TV in the area and entering into the Navy Reserves. Was sent on news assignments each year globally: Puerto Rico, Italy, Kuwait, Pearl Harbor, Wash. DC; Volunteered to serve in Baghdad Iraq in 2007 with American Forces Network in the Green Zone, (dodging incoming mortar fire is NO picnic). Back home just before Christmas '07. Mobilized in Sept '09 sent to GITMO, Cuba, orders ended early due to head injury. Retired from Navy service at NAS JAX Patrol Squadron-62, Nov. 2011. Presently living in sunny Florida, finished a Journalism degree, single life, self employed in broadcast sports TV production working with as a freelance cameraman in College sports (ESPN, ABC/SEC network) and much more. Life is simple with Spring & Summer year around, frolic on the beaches, no children, love to stay in physical condition.
