Rory S's Story

Life Rory "Shane" Riggs is an award winning writer with more than two decades professional experience in his craft. His credentials include the versatility to write both fiction and non-fiction, from news to theatre pieces and to do so with an ability to entertain, enlighten, or inform. Within two years of moving to Northeast Ohio in 1987, Shane was offered his own radio call-in show. During that time he was host to local and national celebrity guests including Marie Osmond, Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, Florence Henderson, David Copperfield, Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees (while Timmons was still in high school), Ronnie McDowell, Patty Loveless, Doug Stone, Irlene Mandrell, and even a a "pre-Regis" Kelly Ripa. While working in all facets of the media, Shane has been a news anchor, reporter, on air personality, staff writer, news director, talk show host, photojournalist, correspondent, news editor and managing editor. He has worked for newspapers and magazines, radio and television stations,public relations firms and one non-profit organization. Under Shane's management, The Sun Journal newspaper in North Canton, Ohio captured 30 awards -- more than any other Ohio newspaper at one time and 11 of them first place distinctions --by the Ohio Newspaper Association in 2000 and in 2001. prestigious Inland Press Foundation award and was tapped the Most Excellent Non-Daily Newspaper of its class nationwide. He is the co-author of two holiday themed books: "Grandma's Christmas Cookies" and its sequel "Grandma's Christmas Cookies, A Second Helping." He is also the author of "Reporter's Notebook: A Journey Through Journalism." In 2001, he assisted entertainer Donny Osmond with a geneology website project and in 2002, he was invited to have tea with the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson. He's been backstage at concerts and visited with performers the likes of Reba McEntire to Blink 182. He covered the visits of two presidents to Canton, Ohio and was in attendance for their press conferences. Shane holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Akron in Mass Media Communications with an emphasis on news. He minored in English and theater. He also holds an Associates Degree from Allegany College of Maryland in University Studies. In 2004, his original play "The Lightbearer" debuted in Cumberland, Maryland to sell out houses. All eight performances of the play sold out when it was produced in early 2006 in North Canton, Ohio. A novel based on the play will be published later this year. In October, 2005, Shane became the managing editor of Allegany Magazine, a lifestyles magazine based in Cumberland, Md.
