Rose Marie's Story

I was born in Paris France when my father was stationed at SHAPE while it was still in France. Had a 5 year break when we returned to the US and lived in Arlington Virginia. When Dad was sent to Korea we moved over to Germany to stay with Grandparents. I attended 1st grade in the same school that my Grandmother and mother attended. Father returned and we were stationed at Butzbach. I attended 1st and 2nd grade there. Then came orders sending my father to Vietnam and we returned to live with grandparents, but I attended 2nd and 3rd grade at an American Elementary School located in Poltersdorf by the Moesel. My third grade teacher was the best. She actually became a family friend. And I was the flower girl at her wedding. Once Dad returned from Vietnam, safe and sound, we were stationed at SHAPE from 1970 to 1975. This was our home for 5 1/2 years. I had a lot of fun and felt more at home there than anywhere else I've been. It was a close community, even if you didn't live on post. We lived in Braine Le Comte, and was friends with the Groetken family. I took Guitar lessons from Doug Burchardt during our last year there. After leaving SHAPE, we ended up in Georgia,...Expand for more
where I attended Bradwell Institute. Imagine my surprise when I walked into the school and ran slap into Kathy and Billy Mitchell. I had known them since Kathy and I were in 4th grade at Shape. We stayed in Georgia for 2 1/2 years, and received orders to go back overseas. We were stationed in Oberursel Germany, Camp King. Attended Frankfurt American High School, where I actually graduated from in 1979. Worked for Area Contracting Office in Frankfurt, it was in the same building as the Dental clinic. I remember going to the Snell Imbiss for lunch and having a bratwurst and beer. Remember riding the Strassenbahn to and from work everyday, and still have my monthly pass as a souvenir. Dad received orders to return to the States and we ended back at Fort Stewart in 1980. I started working for Civil Service at Fort Stewart November 1980 and am still working here today. I am now married and have 2 wonderful children, my daughter Stephanie, and son BJ. The one place that I still miss is SHAPE, and always felt that it was a special place. The friendships that were made over there were truely special. Hope to get in touch with some old friends and possible make new ones.
