Rosemary's Story

Life Rosemary Longworth (formerly Rosemary Longworth Robinson) I was born in St. Louis, MO. Started school at Ashland Elementary. Went through 2 rooms kindergarten and 2 rooms 1st grade in one year. Too much! Dropped out. Started in 2nd grade that fall & was advanced into 3rd. All I wanted was to stay in Rm. 1 kindergarten and be with Lawrence, who dressed as a jack-o-lantern at our Halloween party. I was a "lady in black." Parents moved me to IL summer of 38. Totally changed my life. Rural school was easy but kids were clannish. I never fit in. Dated an older boy (a sailor) thru h.s. & married in Oct. after May graduation. Bad choice. Nine mos. later, my first child was born in a military hosp. over a thousand miles from home. Marriage lasted 28 yrs. Ups and downs. Divorced in 76, he d. 88, our firstborn died 90. (lung cancer). I taught a few yrs. didn't enjoy it. Love library work. Was library clerk in Flagstaff, AZ from 77 to 82. Came back to IL in 84 & been back ever since. Live with 2nd son, married daughter lives nearby. I volunteer at library, am a Red Hat Mama, read, write a little (since I was 14--some small success) garden, walk, and enjoy country life. Best friend in 1st gr. was Emily...wish I could reunite with her and Lawrence again. I still miss MO but what's left of family is here. 1990. Taught 2 years (Spanish I, II, III, and IV) 1986-1988. Taught Literature at Shawnee Community College night classes 1985-1986. Retired from teaching in 1990. (Quit really) Since 1993 I work at substitute librarian at Vienna Public Library and volunteer there on Fridays. Was a library clerk I and II from 1977-1982 and if I had it to do over, I'd major in Library Science, because that's where my heart lies. Workplace Stevens/Hilton Hotel - 4th Floor Credit Dept. Summer of 48; fall & winter of 50; supervisors: Bernice Bell & Vivian Matthews U. S. Fidelity & Guaranty Co., 444 Calif. St. S. F. CA Bond Dept. worked w/Clarice Barkley and Dorothy Muhlig 1951 to 1953; Moved to Hawaii w/my sailor husband & son, Steven. Didn't work for a long time. Some temp. jobs. Was "just a housewife" till 1976. Div. Moved to Flagstaff, AZ. Coconino Credit Bureau - Judy Norwich & 2 of her lazy daughters fall of 1976. Made good friend with Stella Griego though. Left as soon as I got my "huge" divorce settlement of $2500. Summer 77 - UNIVERSAL STUDIOS - as an "Extra." What fun! I made a dear friend on that one, and we still keep in touch. Flagstaff City/County Library 1977 to 1982. Loved library work. Too bad I screwed up and left. Moved to Ventura CA... Was a "temp" a few mos. then worked at Abex Corp in Oxnard 82 to 84. Went back to "temp" work a few mos. before moving back to IL in 84. Taught school at 2 correctional centers, Shawnee Community College, and Vienna High School from 1985 till 1990 when I semi-retired from work. In 1992 I worked briefly for a hateful individual whom I will not name. In 1993 I went to work for Vienna Public Library as a sub. librarian and I've been there ever since--and volunteer there also. I love library work, even the picky stuff like filing, typing, and carding books. (We do a lot of stuff the old fashioned way.) There were a lot of nice people at U. S. Fidelity & Guaranty Co. Lots of great people at the Flagstaff Library too. No great men though anywhere I worked, except at U. S. F. & G. Bruce W...made my heart palpitate.
