Ross's Story

My story.......so far!! Life has been an adventure to date. I was born on the Air-force base in Trenton, Ontario, the first born of 7 children to Allan and Jessie Beatty. After father's 5 year stint with the RCAF, we moved to Peterborough, Ontario with a newby corporation to Canada called IBM. Peterborough was a great chapter in my life, as it has many great sports leagues, close to cottage country, pre-1867 native historical roots, rivers and lakes, and lots of fresh air. I swam for the Peterborough Swim Club, with excellent swimmers like David McKinstry, Gordon Kirk and Marty Dolman. Our coach Gord Minty and Len Smith were awesome and selfless. They brought out our competitive excellence, but more importantly they helped develop our character. My swimming metals represent the efforts of many people, not just myself. Started a 45 year friendship with Barb Puky at the Swim Club. We still chat monthly on the Internet. Played hockey for numerous Peterborough hockey teams, just like every boy in Peterborough. Had the privilege of playing with the Peterborough All Stars, the finest team in Ontario. Father got the inevitable transfer from Peterborough in 1967. IBM stands for I've Been Moved. We moved to Scarborough, Ontario. At 14, a move to a different city is almost catastrophic. Yet, Scarborough proved to be a great place to grow in your teens. The Beatles were coming on strong with the rest of the British invasion, in the 1960s. I turned my head toward music, and theatre, though I was still playing hockey (for Cedar Hill) and running for our high school (Woburn). I remember breaking the 100 yard sprint record at Birchmount Collegiate in 1968. Woburn was a hot bed of arts, music and theatre in the late 1960s. Classmates like Des McAnuff and Mike Richmond we wonderful musicians. Des went on to Broadway in New York, and has produced or directed many successful shows such as Tommy and the Jersey Boys. Des is the Artistic Director of Stratford, in Ontario. Mike plays the best lead guitar in North America, and can still be found in clubs playing in and around Toronto. Realizing that I would not be as successful in music as Elton John or Paul McCartney, I decided to continue on with my schooling and get a profession. Off to Centennial College I went, to study a Liberal Arts course of studies. At Centennial College, I met a group of very interesting professors who opened my eyes to history, philosophy and political science. I decided to keep going, and enrolled at University of Toronto, at St. Michael's College. After graduating from St. Michael's College in 1977, at the University of Toronto, I started my career on Bay Street, in the financial jungle. Since 1977, I have spent over...Expand for more
33 years in the public markets holding roles as an officer, director and owner of numerous Canadian brokerage firms. Then, as majority owner of the Canadian IDA investment firm R.J. Beatty Financial Inc., I created and built an Ontario, Canada based investment house, which eventually managed assets in excess of over two billion dollars. I have initiated and/or participated in over 500 Initial Public Offerings (IPOs). This is a bit of a long trip from the air-force base in Trenton, Ontario. In my role as Chairman of R.J.Beatty Financial Corp., I help place the most sought after talent for their portfolio companies. I act as a "venture catalyst" creating the structure of organizations, building high-calibre leadership teams and providing R. J. Beatty Financial Corp. partner companies with ongoing counsel and a firm strategic partnership to address needs that arise as their business ventures grow. I seek out and negotiate top-level deals and acquisitions as well as management candidates; design the organizational architecture the company should adopt; counsel on how to deploy people against strategy. Prior to starting R. J. Beatty Financial Corp., I held managerial and directorship positions with an number of international financial and investment services and management consulting companies. From my work with dozens of companies, on hundreds of public stock offerings, as well as numerous mergers and acquisitions, I have acquired an in-depth knowledge, not only of the leading companies and managers, but of the industries, the importance of the various technologies on which they depend and the most promising future business opportunities. Prior to forming R.J. Beatty Financial Corp., I was a Director of Midland Walwyn, Canada's largest financial services investment firm. I also taught as a Continuing Education professor at Seneca College, in Toronto, Ontario. As a result of my civic contributions and achievements I received the respected Citizen of the Year Award. I am also the recipient of the prestigeous Andrew Carnegie Award for research and community contribution. I have been active in the arts, and has been involved with many advisory boards of the arts. I am the Founding Director of Strings over the Caribbean (Nassau, The Bahamas); Music at Speedside (Guelph, Ontario); and Highland Sounds (Halifax, Nova Scotia); all nationally recognized Chamber Music Festivals. Currently, my investment focus is primarily in the solar, wind, and biomass to energy industries, as President and CEO of the Solar Bancorp Group of Companies as well as Market Place Financial Inc.. It has been an awesome ride so far. Drop me a line sometime and let me know how you are doing. Best to you in 2011. Ross
