Ross's Story
After graduation from DeAnza in 1959, I worked for the Richmond School Department as a temproary laborer and then went to work for the California Division of Forestry out of Morgan Hill, CA as a firefighter. In December of 1959 I joined the Coast Guard. I went to a class "A" School in Groton Connecticut and was assigned to the CG District Office in San Francisco. I met my wife Mary Ault (62) for the first time on a blind date. She was going to school at Harry Ells in Richmond. We were married in September 1961. Seven months after we were married, we decided to go to Alaska. I stayed in the Coast Guard for 5 years and was released and went to Southern Oregon College. I took a job with Alaska Marine Highway System and then with the Department of Public Safety. I left there when the State had a regime change. orage. I could not get the Coast Guard out of my blood, so I came back into the Coast Guard and was assigned to a buoy tender in Greenville, Mississippi. After 30 more years in the Coast Guard I eventually ended back up in Anchorage, Alaska where I retired. After retirement I had a consulting job with a maritime company. This job did not have the challenges that the Coast Guard offered, so I retired permanently in 1998 and I just do volunteer work to keep busy.
My wife and I have 8 children, 3 sons and 5 daughters and 30 grandchildren. My wife died in 2010 and I remarried in 2012 and moved to Bartlett, TN for 2 years and then to Juarez, Mexico. I then left the paradise city of Mexico and came back to my home in Hansville, WA. I will see after a couple years if I will stay here or move on somewhere else. I have lived in so many beautiful places it is hard to decide which one is better.
