Ross's Story
Life
Life is an adventure. Sometimes you find direction by experiencing life. The Navy enlistment 71-75 was instrumental in understanding what opportunities would mean in the future. The GI bill enabled me to go back to college and finish up and an additional two years of graduate school. It changed my life.
Leaving Hawaii is another life changing experience - going off island and experiencing life elsewhere. Through the Navy I got to live in San Diego, The Bay Area in Northern CA and near Tokyo Japan. Through the Naval Reserves I got to experience New England, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sardinia, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, Italy, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington DC.
In graduate school got to intern for Sen.Dan Akaka when he was a Congressman back in the early 80's. Enjoyed it but decided life in the fast lane was definitely not my style.
Met Cindy, my wife, during my second stint in college. She finished up at Univ Puget Sound and I went on to Carnegie-Mellon in Pittsburgh. Have 2 wonderful sons.
Recalled for active duty Bosnia in 98-99 and 2001 in Mechanicsburg PA. Was in Bosnia for start of war in Kosovo. Appreciate what freedom means and the opportunities available in America.
Enjoy spending time with family and friends. Hope life has been great for you too.
School
Non-traditional student, late bloomer - went to UH Manoa 2 years, Portland State 1 year, enlisted in the Navy. First major - elementary education. Worked a couple years and and decided to attend Kapiolani Community College. Met my wife and dated for 1 year. She transferred to University of Puget Sound, I had only 1 year left at UH so began looking at graduate schools - a family friend suggested going to the east coast if I wanted to eventually come back to Hawaii. Finished with a POLSCI degree and received tuiton scholarship to Carnegie-Mellon University in Public Policy and Management. Never worked harder in my academic life. H...Expand for more
ad to master math from algebra to calculus in one summer session. Graduated in two years and also have a certificate in accounting from Elizabethtown College. It's never too late to go back and try. You are more motivated when you are paying for everything yourself. You never know what you can accomplish.
Military
Two halves of a career - 1) enlisted 1971 as a Hospital Corpsman and made it to HMC in the reserves. 2) commissioned as an ensign supply corps in 1985 and made it to CDR.
Many enlisted assignments with Marine medical support units - 29 Palms, NATO amphibious exercise, Camp Lejune, Camp Johnson for FMS.
Supply Corps assignments included tour with USS Estocin, Cargo Handling Bn 8, CART 104, Bronx, NY, DSCP Phila, Naval Supply Systems Command, Mechanicsburg PA.
Recalled in 98-99 for Bosnia Operation Joint Forge and for 8 months in 2001 to work for the NAVSUP Comptrollers office.
It's been a wild and rewarding career. 32 years and all in pay.
Time with family has become more important than money.
Kalani experience - two cousins in our graduating class - Lynn Kawasaki and Sharon Kumamaru. Many other cousins also attended during our time at Kalani,, all from Kaimuki Intermediate. Lynn passed away weeks after our 40th reunion. I haven't seen Sharon in about 40 years - last I heard she lived in Vegas. Mr.Toshito Nakagawa of the custodial staff was my uncle as well. Marjorie Yoshioka, the French teacher, also lived along Kalanianaole and babysat me when I was in preschool. Our home was just after M's Ranch House near the Veterinarian Clinic.
Now retired from the State of Pennsylvania working for many agencies with the last 19 years at the Public School Employee's Retirement System. Enjoy volunteer work and am in my 5th and last term as President of Philippine American Association of Central Pennsylvania.
I hope this finds you safe and well. Wishing all of my fellow falcons and classmates the best in the future.
