Ruth's Story

Life I graduated from high school in 1980, with no direction for my life. Less than a year later, I was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and things began falling amazingly into place. In 1984 I moved to Provo, Utah, and made many of my best friends. After heeding the call from LDS Church President Ezra Taft Benson, to read the Book of Mormon, I did so for the first time. I became anxious to share this with others and soon afterwards was called to serve a mission in the England Manchester Mission. The best experiences of my entire life, up to that point, occured on English soil. At the conclusion of my mission I met my future husband and we were soon married in the LDS Temple in Provo, Utah, and had our first child there less than 2 years later. My husband graduated earned his Master's Degree from Brigham Young University and our dream of living and raising our family in a small town became a reality. We moved to Iowa and have never looked back. Between babies I continued my education; first, at Graceland University, learning French. This was supplemented by BYU Independent Study, where I've taken Russian History, Humanities, and Shakespeare. I married into a family of avid readers and I've thusfar read many works by Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, the Bronte Sisters, John Donne, Edmund Spencer and James Harriott, the famed vet from Yorkshire. My father-in-law took me to all the places in Yorkshire that were featured in the All Creatures Great and Small series. Being married to an Englishman, it is inevitable that I would return to England and venture onto the European Continent. I've been to Normandy, France, where we stayed near Omaha and Utah beaches; and Amsterdam, and will one day stretch to Russia, Poland, and Germany, and perhaps the Czech Republic. However, I have been all through the English countryside, up the width and breadth of the British Isles, as far south as Portsmouth and as far north as Scotland. I'm completing my Sophmore year at Graceland University, having studied German and World Civilization. My life is far better than I imagined it. I was raised to live a life of depression and failure, but it hasn't been that way at all. I can best sum up my life with the words of Ezra Taft Benson, late President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; " Men and women who turn their lives over to God will discover that He can make a lot more out of their lives than they can. He will deepen their joys, expand their vision, quicken their minds, increase their opportunities, comf...Expand for more
ort their souls, raise up friends, and pour our peace. Whosoever will lose his life in the service of God will find eternal life." And I will continue my education as time and conditions permit. C. S. Lewis, one of my favorite Britains, said, 'Those who want education badly do so while conditions are yet unfavorable. Favorable conditions never come.' I couldn't have put it better! School Mrs. French taught me to read. Mrs. Pope was my favorite teacher, and because of this, my third grade year was probably my best in all 12 years of school! Mrs. Pope encouraged me, thought the best of me, and brought out the very best in me! I have to say, too, that my following year, with Miss McGinty, was also a hallmark year. Both these grades are responsible for forming my attitudes about learning later in my school career, and persist now. Not that any of my other teachers were bad. Not in the least! But these two ladies stand out the most. I'll always be thankful that Mrs. Tucker and Mrs. Fortson insisted on superior work from me. They never allowed me to settle for my second best, and while I may not have been an honor student, I worked hard and was persistent. The lessons they taught me are still etched in my memory, and I am passing these down to my own girls. I worked very hard at Victory Baptist. Although I was only able to attend for 2 years, I will always be thankful for the moral values they instilled in me, and for rewarding me for my diligence. CAC---I made some of the funnest and funniest friends there, and wish we could reconnect! There were a LOT of laughs, especially in our senior year! I don't recall having laughed so hard my entire life!! Please! Look me up!! E-mail me! College Late 1980 I began a my brief college career at a local community college, with a desire to major in Criminal Justice. My intention was to eventually focus in the field of investigation, as per a family trait. Something in the family line that just perpetuats that field of work! I wouldn't return to college until 1992, and my focus had entirely changed by then. Foreign studies/language were my strong points at that time. That is when I began to be an ardent reader. Since the age of 30 I've read my books than up to that time. Should I list them?? No, but my children have well surpassed what I've read these past several years! Having an international husband and having traveled internationally, and learning that my real strength lies in things foreign, I am contiuing my education at Graceland, this time studying German. I may do Spanish, eventually!
