Barbara Ruth - Brie's Story
As I turned 77 I took on one of the most exciting and challenging projects of my life. I became a member of a local Santa Cruz artist immersion program devoting a year to creating a collection of art to wear clothing for the seasoned woman. With each piece I'm either learning a new skill or further developing something I've tried before. Of course I had to dye my hair coppery red for the experience. I won't do cartwheels down the runway like designer Betsey Johnson but I will, in all probability, break into a happy dance when I have everything assembled and wearable. I'm having a lot of fun. Working with fabric is much easier on my hands than the mosaics I'm putting on hold for a while, no gritty grout to contend with.
2017 update: As with many artistic journeys, mine took a detour and instead of creating clothing for other women, I focused on writing my memoir illustrated with the designs I create for each part of the story. I've posted two of the outfits of my memoir, "Old El Paso" which speaks to my Texas roots, and "From Strictly Formal to Street Fun", a tale of tribes and their recognizable decorations. As I continue with this quest to write and illustrate my life I invite others to share my journey. After all, they are only words and fabrics until I make something of them and then they are only threads and stories until we make something of them.
The last few years I've worked more with mosaic tile than ...Expand for more
fabric. As I turned 83 I decided to focus equally on both. I'm finishing an exterior mosaic and about to begin another. I'm also converting my one car garage into a design studio with a large sink for dyeing fabric. The combined smoke from the 2020 north and south county fires and the epic drought have made me work harder to become more efficient at keeping my gardens lush. I've lost some Japanese maples, wisteria, roses, and bamboo but the remaining trees, vines, shrubs, and stands are continuing to give me great pleasure. It's within these pockets of green and other vibrant colors that I'm renewed and inspired to create. I continue to write my life story in the quiet hours between bursts of energy. I welcome guests to my corner of paradise. May we all be well.
2024 Update to my story: I just had my heart valve replaced and I'm looking forward to dancing, gardening, and creating textiles again in the fall. Some of my large old oak trees have fallen in the storms and drought that have hit California. I'm planning sunny space gardens where my shady areas once thrived. My garage design studio remains a dream due to halts from the pandemic and tree fall damage. I'm hoping to get back to it shortly. In the mean time I'm studying shibori dyeing techiques and planning some collage clothing. I continue to write and enjoy British murder mysteries. My invitation for visitors stands. I'd love to catch up on your lives.
