Ruth's Story
Life
I was a liberal arts student in the 1960's, 70's and 80's. Eight schools; nine years, full time to get: a BA in psychology; RN/BSN; Family Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive authority.
I'd had the good fortune to be born into a home of unconditional love and grew up in a pacifist home; my Dad, now 86, had a theological deferment for WWII. One of my 8 schools was Eastern Mennonite College,in Harrisonburg, VA (1970.) Kindness and gentleness are characteristics that I value most highly--plus a sense of humor !
On 2 June 1974, I left Baltimore, MD-- where I had lived alone since 1971-- heading west to be "research assistant" in CO with Dave Rugh, wildlife biologist (and the older brother of my college roommate at Maryville College, TN, 1969 - 1971.) so treasure. After twelve weeks of camping in Dave's "not quite two person backpack tent" and logging 12,000 miles on my Toyota Corolla, we found that we were still friends--and have continued our lives together. We returned to Columbus, OH, then moved to Seattle in 1976.
Since 1977, we have been developing our "Home for Life" on the Olympic Peninsula, six miles from the National Park, rather "off the grid." Dave and another man put the walls of our original cedar home kit together in eight hours. In the many years (decades!)since, the "finish work" has continued.
Cairn Constance, 8/27/1985 - 11/3/2004, provided us the greatest opportunities of our lives, enriching us significantly.
Dave, a wildlife/whale biologist with NOAA, based in Seattle, since 1976, plans to retire at the end of the fiscal year, 30 September 2010 (also my 60th Birthday !)
