Ruth's Story
When I Grow Up I Want to Be. . .
. . .something wonderful! I just haven't yet decided what.
I was well aware the tenth commandment says "Thou shalt not covet," but covet I did. My mother always knew what she wanted to be when she grew up. An artist. My older sister knew from first grade, when she visited the school library. Librarian. I'm still trying to figure it out.
In high school I decided to be a research chemist. I'd work for Bell Laboratories and improve the lot of man. That was before I took Mr. Bint's chemistry class.
Instead I took up Mother's mantle and entered college an art major. By the end of Year One, ...Expand for more
with summer vacation beckoning, teaching gained a certain luster. I became an education major.
That survived one semester. It fell apart the following period when I enrolled in my first education course, child development. I still wonder how something as shimmeringly ephemeral as childhood could be made dry as dust.
I'm still waiting for that dynamic conviction of what to be when I grow up. I'm still a little bit jealous, because I still don't know. But in the meantime I have been some pretty wonderful things: worker, wife, mother. Kitchen chemist. Occasional artist. Educator to my eight children.
I'll settle for that.
