Ruthie's Story
Life
I'm living in Quito, Ecuador with my husband of 21 years, Frank Hankins, and 2 of our 3 daughters. Our oldest daughter is a sophomore in college in Redding, CA. We have lived in Latin America since 1986--Costa Rica for one year, Guayaquil, Ecuador for 11 years and Quito for 3 years. Scattered in between was a year in AZ and various years in Redding.
After high school I spent 4 years at Simpson college in SF and spent a summer in Colombia with missionaries. Then came a Master's degree in Christian Education at a seminary in Saskachewan, Canada. Pretty cold for an LA girl. I worked in Bellingham, WA for two years and then was ready to head for Ecuador as a missionary. Those plans got interupted for a year when I met Frank. We met, got engaged and married all in 1984! As newlyweds we moved from Pasadena to Nyack, NY and back after 6 months. In 1987 we moved to Costa Rica.
Our work here is with an evangelical mission angency. I am mainly involved in women's Bible studies and being a soccer and basketbal...Expand for more
l mom. That may surprize you if you remember my the extent of my athletic ability! We really enjoy living here. I've had to become fluent in Spanish (the year in Costa Rica was for language study) and am so glad for good basics from Mr. Voss at Airport Jr. High. Our girls are fluent and bi-cultural, too. We will probably be cheering for Ecuador in the World Cup. Their school is an International school with a U.S. curriculum and an emphasis in Spanish proficiency. I am amazed that they can write 14 page papers in Spanish!
The other member of the family is Sherlock the Basset Hound. Since many of our colleagues spend 1 year in 5 in the US, we have become the "foster dog" family while they are out of the country. We had Skittles, a female basset, with us for 18 months and Dusty the poodle for 14 months.
This is our last year in Ecuador. We will return to the US in June 2006 and spend the summer in Redding. From there we aren't sure WHERE we will be.
Well, that is a quick review of the last 30 years, whew!
