My 2011 Bio R. AYESHA MUHAMMAD LIEUTENANT COMMANDER UNITED STATES NAVY (RETIRED) Retired United States Navy Lieutenant Commander, born in Ayden, North Carolina and graduated with honors from South Ayden High School. Graduated from North Carolina A&T State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work in 1975. From 1977 - 1979, served as Public Relations Director for the Northeast Regional Imams (Muslim religious leaders), and was a licensed underwriter with Equitable Life Insurance Company and CUNY Mutual in New York City. Earned a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Development from Webster University and a Certificate of Training in the Intensive Islamic Shari’ah Program from the Imam Mohammed Ibn Saud Islamic University. Masters level studies in Multimedia and Public Relations at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan and in Education and Counseling at Marymount University. In June 1979 she enlisted in the U. S. Navy and attended basic training in Orlando, Florida. Following basic training she attended Yeoman “A” School in Meridian, Mississippi. She reported to Naval Military Personnel Command (NMPC-5) for her first military assignment where she was selected to attend Naval Officer Candidate School. Commissioned an Ensign in the fall of 1980 at the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island becoming the first female of the Islamic faith to join the military and obtain a commission as a line officer in any of the Armed Services. Other travels include Hawaii, Arizona, Colorado, Tokyo, Hokaido, Iwaguni, etc. Awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (Three Awards); Joint Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal, Operation Desert Storm Medal, Navy Recruiting Medal, Navy Recruiting Gold Wreath (Five Awards); active volunteer with the Headstart Program, Habitat International, United Way, the Navy Relief Society, various Islamic Groups and programs; honored as an Outstanding Citizen from Congress; honored by the Presidential Points of Light Program (1st President Bush), and numerous other accolades. A dynamic public speaker; former newscaster, Program Director for a radio station, floor director for CBS affiliate in Michigan, and free-lance journalist; has appeared in various national and international magazines and newspapers Ms. Muhammad has one son, which she homeschooled for high school; Shamsuddin Ali Al-Uqdah, “Ali” is a Honor Graduate from the Art Institute of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Multi-media and Web Design; a Who’s Who Among Junior Colleges graduate from Northern Virginia Community College; a Congressional Service Award recipient and currently is serving on active duty. .
