Ryan's Story
After SLHS, I went to U of M for a couple years, and then spent a little over a year studying German linguistics at the Albert-Ludwig-Universitaet in Freiburg, Germany. I then returned to U of M for another year to finish up my B.A. in linguistics (with a focus on applied linguistics and language teaching) and German language in 2000.
After that, I moved to Japan to work as a teacher in the Shiwa, Iwate public schools through the Japanese Ministry of Education's JET Program. I spent 3 years in that position, after which I taught English and German at a non-profit education center in Morioka, Japan, where I worked from 2003 until 2007. I was also an adjunct lecturer at Morioka College and Iwate University, teaching undergraduate English courses.
In 2007, I moved back to the U.S. and started graduate school at Michigan State University in their TESOL/Applied Linguistics MA program, There, I was a research assistant and also taught academic writing courses for international undergrads.
In 2009, I began a PhD in Second Language Acquisition at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. There, I taught first-year writing courses to international undergraduate students, served as Assistant Director of Second Language Writing, and worked as a researcher on the CMU-Q Study of Literacy.
