Ryan's Story
I attended Washington from first to fifth grade (1989-1994). I wore that red jacket a lot, and have a lot of warm memories. I loved the playground, the yearly carnivals with the dunk tank and miscellaneous activities and games in the hallways. I was a jogathon participant and remember really going for it on the home stretch of each lap. There were door-to-door calendar sales, the second and third grade basketball team, and my gigantic crush on Terra! I got paint in Heather's hair once during class, much to her horror...
Some of the classrooms had high windows that were opened on warm days with a long pole. There was heavy use of slap bracelets, some great tetherball matches at recess, and really good friends. The sun shining against the blue and white gym exterior during school events like the maypole dance still sticks out in my mind. Oh, and "warball," anyone? Barely bounce it over the midline and everyone's groaning.
I had a red DuckTales lunchbox, and in the cafeteria was often aware of the traffic light which would emit shrill noises when the collective lunch room chatter got too loud. Was there really Windex spilled into a batch of chicken nuggets once? The cafeteria also had a stage and was the site of a few plays including Scrooge, starring Zach.
There was Oregon Trail on the original floppy disks in the library computer lab and informational filmstrip reels. My lifelong fascination with historical disasters started with a viewing of "Secrets of the Titanic" on classroom video or ...Expand for more
film, and subsequently checking out all the available Titanic books. Pretty amazing to remember that they were still showing reel-to-reel film in classrooms for certain things. So much 1960s infrastructure was still in place and in use there in the early 1990s.
Gym class was great on the rare occasion an obstacle course was put together or when a dodge ball match was scheduled. I also surprised some of the jock kids with my basketball shooting skills! I could do about one pull-up... On a good day...
My square dancing partner was Kristina, and the selection process for that was probably the single most uncomfortable thing in my life up to that point! We made a good pair, though. At some point, the class learned a dance to "Achy Breaky Heart." It's so ingrained, that I have amused my coworkers with it a couple times... Right, right, left, left, heel bounce, turn, heel bounce, cross over, cross over, step back, jump & clap. Then there was one time I ate it on one of those little 4-wheeled butt scooters, cut my lip, and promptly fainted.
Once the playground sawdust was removed and replaced with rubber chips, recess became a rubber war. People would try to fling and throw that stuff constantly when they weren't being watched. Teddy once landed on me after falling/jumping from a height, and it was probably the rubber that saved me from lasting injury... Shaun, John, and Teddy were great friends.
I loved Washington, and am thankful that I had such a warm and positive childhood during those years.
