Rymond's Story

Life I was born (1925) and raised in St. Louis. My family lived in the north St. Louis area. I attended Elliot grammar school and graduated in 1938. I then wen to Central High School and graduated in January, 1942. I worked for about two years and then entered Washington University on a half tuition scholarship (then worth $125 per year). I completed my freshman year in Chemical Engineering and then enlisted in the Navy V-12 program. They sent me to Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago) and I received my B.S. in October 1945. I was commisioned an Ensign and sent out to Guam shere I was the personnel office in the Navy Supply Depot. I was disccharged from the Navy in the summer of 1946. I remained in St.Louis, living with my family, and entered Washington U. graduate school. In 1947 I received my M.S. in Chemical Engineering and in 1951, my Ph. D. I went to work for what was then Standard Oil of New Jersey (now ExxonMobil) in their research affiliate in Linden, N. J. While there, I met Jean Peterson and we were married in 1953. Shortly after that I transferred from research to the corporate headquarters in New York. This led to a number of management assignments including several years in London and then in France where I was a director of Esso France. My Exxon career ended in Coral Gables, F...Expand for more
L where I was the vice-president of the Exxon company managing all of Exxon's interests in Central American and the Carribean Islands. I retired in 1984. For about 8 years,I was a part-time professor at the U. of Miami and Barry U. (Miami) teaching Business Ethics and International Business. I am now fully retired. We spend our winters in Vero Beach, FL and our summers in Landgrove, VT where we have been visiting for almost 40 years. At first we only spent winter vacations in Vermont, but now we have a house and spend our summers and Christmas' here. We have two children a boy and a girl, both married. Our daughter lives in Brunswick, GA (no children). Our son lives on Los Altos Hills, CA and has an adopted 5-year old son, our only grandchild. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in October, 2003. I had my 80th birthday in January, 2005 and my wife had her 78th in June, 2005. We are both in reasonable good health, considering our age. We enjoy our "two homes" life. We travel a lot, but now almost esxclusively on cruises--they are convenient and eliminate the unpacking and packing of land travels. Actually, on our cruising, we've been around the world twice and there are very few countries we haven't visited. I enjoy hearing from classmates--grammar school, high school and colleges.
