Sally's Story

Life I went under the name Stockdale in school which was my stepfather's name. On grad. I took my deceased father's name of Gregg. View all of my other bios. to sum up everything. WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!!! School The fall after graduation I entered nursing school at St. Margaret's Hosp. only to find out that the school of nursing was closing after our fr. year. We concurrently attended St. Joseph's college for classes which is where we surprisingly were told the news. Several of us transferred to St. Bernard's Hosp. in Chicago to complete school. Pat Koselke Keil '65 was/is my dearest friend and roommate in nursing school. After passing Ill. state boards, I worked at St. Bernards and entered their French/Canadian Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph or Hotel Dieu Sisters in Canada. My ultimate dream was to be a missionary in the Dominican Republic. Time was spent in Montreal at the Mother House; almost everyone there spoke French which left me to just smile alot. During my couple of years's stay, I decided that I needed to have more life experiences before making this kind of committment. (I had converted to the Catholic faith when I was a freshman). I too found out that the "nuns" were "real people" too and that you have to seek within yourself to discover what is important in life. After being "in the real world" I met my current husband via a blind date. We were married at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church/Chgo. 40yrs. ago. We have 4 children: Debra 39 who attended Northwestern for theater/acting; Stephen 37,working in electronics, 2 children; Veronica 27, married, 2 children, Kirk Patrick II 21, attends DePauw Univ., Greencastle, Ind. He was selected to be one of Ill. People to People student ambassadors to Australia/New Zeiland summer 2003. Last, but not least, we have Michael, 11, who keeps life young! We have lived in Wilmette, Il. about 10 blocks from Lake Michigan for 22 yrs. I have always worked with surgical cardiac care or medical coronary care. While in nursing school and attending Loyola Univ. ob/gyne. was my forte but switched to the heart for some reason. I love my career and it is difficult to be a full time mom and juggle both. Let me know the secret. Guess I'll be an active mom till my next life. Maybe then the "get a life" or doing something new for me will occur. We attend St. Francis Xavier Church in Wilmette and am active in all the "volunteering" that is requested. When my "kids" were in grammar school I was spread out amongst 3 schools working in libraries, cafeterias, carpools, swimming, skating, soccer, and basketball, bake sales, girl scouts, camping ...Expand for more
(had to have a nurse)for forest/hiking/"large animal" attacks!! Certainly have learned with all of the above that one does learn/cope/survive despite how scarry at times it all seems. My words to rely on "God does't give you more than HE thinks you can handle". That's not always easy to see. My hardest coping was with the birth/death of our third child. I had pre-eclampsia, on 3 mo. bed rest, stabilized, labor, intern who didn't know what she was doing, attending didn't show (fell back asleep), baby arrived breech, with inexperience of their delivery skills being new interns and nature not slowing down our daughter had a brain hemorrhage, lived 4 days on the ventillator, and I faced the decision to take off the vent. Not an easy thing to do. That took alot of prayer and soul searching. The grieving process was definitely a reality. It took me almost a year before I could speak of this without sobbing. I'm still trying to understand why. Thanks for listening. I probably forgot a few things about my life--will update as it goes!!!!!! College I now have attained a BS in Health Sciences/Management and am studying to be involved in another venue of nursing doing medical legal consulting. I always wanted to be a nurse or a doctor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a far-fetched idea. As it turns out, they were WRONG. My hero in growing up was our HHS biology teacher, Jon Hendrix. His wit, encouragement, smiles, wild jokes, but KIND,LOVING heart and his zest for learning and sharing was always an inspiration for me. His lovely wife, Jan,was equally involved with his students and always shared her role of love and support to all she embraced. I remember babysitting for them after highschool and while I would be at home from college at various times. Their support and encouragement molded my thoughts on striving to do better which is a big portion of my story. Every child is truly different and each has their individual story to offer the world. We, as parents, can only guide and love them with all of our hearts. How they take those "gifts" and share them with the world is what makes them unique. Maybe one day "we" can all write a book on rearing children! It would be interestig all of the commonalities we all share despite where we are in the world. I hope old friends would see me as a gentle loving person who loves life, people, and who tried to make a small difference in the world by giving back in the health care industry. The quality of what you share with others about yourself far outweighs the quantity! I am also on FB and would love to see you there. Let me know.
