Sally (Sarah)'s Story

Hello my fellow Tosa East alum! I didn’t get to know very many of you well back then. I was busy with school, a PT job, boyfriends, and surviving and learning about life. (Weren’t we all). I did a road trip age 19 and discovered beautiful Arizona along the way. So I moved there with 3 suitcases and a guitar. Met a great guy, had my precious daughter and had a very full fun 17 years in Flagstaff, AZ, which was a small (then) mountain town at the base of the San Francisco peaks. I became an avid outdoorswoman, backpacking, skiing, river rafting in the Grand Canyon and other SW rivers. I co-opened a Women’s Bookstore with my baby girl on my hip! I had an absolutely great life there in my 20s and 30s. I traveled the world quite a bit back then. Spent a few months in SE Asia backpacking and trekking in Nepal, making the long and scary (for me) trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp. That was 1986, before the boom of tourist climbers which has led to so many deaths. Spent time in SW China, Burma (now Myanmar, a military dictatorship at the time, thank goodness for my naivete or I would never have gone there and would have missed out on some of the oldest decaying temples, breathtaking!), Thailand (the people were so kind, loved Koh Samui, could have stayed there forever!) I’ve also backpacked at Denali National Park in Alaska, the Continental Divide in the lower Rockies, Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Canyonlands and way down into Mexico. Living in Flagstaff from 1975-1991, I was introduced to whitewater rafting by my hiking companion boyfriend at the time who worked for Hatch River Company in Utah. That started a decade long love affair with the Grand Canyon. I rowed my own raft through the Canyon on an 18 day trip that turned me from a young woman with many fears and insecurities into a warrior! I got hired on by a commercial rafting company taking touris...Expand for more
ts through Grand Canyon on the Colorado River from 1986-1993. I learned teamwork and made lifelong friends. The Canyon is my “heart home”. I am so fortunate to have lived so closely and intimately with the mother of all Canyons on the earth, People have said “you should write a book” about all of my adventures that helped me heal the deep wounds of childhood family stuff. And I still may do that! (If anyone has any tips about writing a memoir ,let me know!) I had divorced in 1980, we co-raised our daughter amicably. Since then I’ve had a lifetime of some great relationships of varying lengths. I just wasn't cut out for settling down again until I was in my 40s. I moved to Washington State to get my Master’s Degree in Psychology/counseling and proceeded into a regular career and a settled down life with a partner, discovering how good it feels to have a safe home and a more settled life with friends and family. My partner and I decided to uncouple about 8 years ago but we continued being great friends and we shared our dog until he passed in 2019. I lived in a beautiful spot on the waterfront of Puget Sound for 5 years, single again, where I could launch my kayak any high tide! I retired in 2019 and two weeks before the Covid shutdown, I moved back into my home that I continue to co-own with ex, who continues to be my best friend! I know! Who does that, right? But we have a great sharing arrangement that provides freedom with security. My daughter lives in the same town and is also my best friend. Life has been full, rich, hard, scary, adventurous, thrilling, joyful, sad, you name it. Overall, looking back, its been an amazing ride. I still get to the Milwaukee/Tosa/Brookfield areas every year to spend time with family and friends. If you knew me at Tosa East, let me know if you’d like to meet up! Here’s hoping you’ve had a great life too!
