Sam's Story
Life
Update: It's been over a year since I lost my wife Dar to cancer. I miss her more, and in new and different ways all the time. Luke and I are in Cabot, AR now, and we are getting along fine. You can see a tribute to Darlene, as well as other photos on my MySpace. It's the normal url followed by /samskaggs.
--------------------------------------------------------------Well, after fleeing the beauty of the Oregon coast, I spent four miserable years at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. It was a truly humbling experience--which I'm sure many of you would agree I needed. Well, after that, pilot training continued the "humbling process". I have been stationed in Mississippi, California, Georgia, Kansas, Texas, Alabama, and now Germany. I have taken part in numerous operations around the world. I haven't been deployed to Iraq, as I was flying combat missions in Afghanistan during the recent "war" with Iraq, but I did fly mission over Iraq in the years that followed Desert Storm. No, I'm not ...Expand for more
a fighter pilot. I have have flown the KC-135R (air refueling) and the C-130H (tactical airlift). It's not as glamourous, but I wouldn't trade places with a fighter guy if I had the chance (well, maybe for a little while ;) ). Anyway, I've got about five years until retirement, and then my wife of over 13 years, Darlene, wants me to do something that will "make some real money." We have one son, Luke, who is just a little stud. Unfortunately for Dad, he isn't really into playing sports, but he does seem to like girls (imagine that!).
I haven't been back to Brookings since 1987, but I'd certainly love to. I'm anxiously awaiting our 20th reunion, as I was deployed to Turkey during our 10th. I truly enjoyed my years with you all, and many of my fondest memories are from "B-ville".
I'd like to close with a humble apology to those that I did not treat with the proper respect and dignity they deserved during our time at BHHS. I hope one day to apologize in person.
May God Bless you all.
