Samuel's Story

Life I was born at Illinois Research Hospital, April 25, 1946 to the former Maggie Lee Peyton and the Reverend Samuel David Mason Marion Hundley. I was the third of three children, My brother Cyrus and my sister Cheryl made appearances before me. We lived at 3609 So. State ST. in the back of my father’s barbershop until August 1949 when my parents purchased a house on the West side's Homan Ave. I attended Howland Elementary School. After Howland, I attended Hess Upper Grade Center.. I was always "little" in grammar school through Howland and Hess. I was 4'10" tall and 80 lbs. entering high school. My father had passed away in November of 1959 and I started wearing glasses, So there I was short, and depressed entering an environment where jocks and B.S. prevailed, I was miserable. But before high school and after I have had a wonderful life. So much so that once, after complaining about having to fly to Dallas on business, a friend named James Terry told me "you're living a life that other men dream about" and regardless of what has transpired since then, I am and have been most appreciative of the life I have lived and led. Today, I am 5'11" tall and 250lb, I met my first Wife Norma, at Wright Jr. College, where too much bid whist and social life made that a short stay. (Not to mention a fight that sent me to the hospital and got me black listed from the Junior college system.) I then attended the now defunct "ECPI", Electronic Computer Programming Institute, completing a certificate program on February 28, 1967 and received a draft notice that same day. Sooooooo......I enlisted into the Army Security Agency, I served my basic training at Fort Lenardwood and from there I was sent to "The HALL", Arlington Hall Station, Virginia. I Loved The Hall, the work, the people, and the assignments. (The Army Stuff kept getting in the way.) I got to the Hall in May of 1967 as a Pvt. E-1, I left in March 1971 as A Specialist E-6. There I met Al Bazzare, the best manager a man could work for. I worked for Al for all four years and learned a lot. At the Hall I became a Computer Programmer, then a Systems Analyst, I took the CLEP exams which later came to prove most important to my finishing College. I made some life long friendships. I entered Loop Jr. College. Norma and I had a daughter we named Whitney, born to us in July 1971.In January 1973 I filed for divorce which was granted in September 1973. I had received an AA in business from The Loop Junior College in June of that year so I now began the task of getting a BSBA From Roosevelt University.. At the Loop I met Charles Murray, Jerry Jenkins, Barbara Ross who became lifelong friends, All of us held full time jobs while going to school at night. Charlie went Part time I attended full-time. this meant we ate dinners in restaurants, our favorite place being the Playboy Club.. One of the bunnies, Lee (real name Dianna) there arranged for me to meet one Shirley Graham, who became my wife on June 5, 1977. Fast forward to today (2005), Shirley and I have been married 28 years as of this writing, In 1978 we purchased the house we are currently living in. Shirley is a wonderful wife. She is a human resource manager at Deloitte. I have been on long term medical disability since August 2000 when I suffered a heart attack. I had open-heart surgery followed by a series of complications BUT I'm doing OK. My sister suffers from congestive heart failure, she’s doing OK. My Mother died in 1986 as a result of burns from a house fire. My Brother passed away in May of 2002 from a heart attack. I have been working on three books: a novel, a family tree, and a cookbook. My mother, her mother and her brother were professional cooks. My mother was a wonderful cook and my siblings and I learned how to cook early in life.. So the cookbook(s?) will be special. My wife and a friend Dr. Janice Hobson are working with me on publishing these items along with greeting cards and other things. School I attended Howland Elementary School at 16th and Spaulding from Kindergarten through sixth grade. After Howland, I attended Hess Upper Grade Center on Douglas Blvd. and St. Louis. I was always "little" in grammar school through Howland and Hess. I was 4'10" tall and 80 lbs. entering high school. My father had passed away in November of 1959 and I started wearing glasses, So there I was short, and depressed entering an environment where jocks and BS prevailed, I was miserable. Today, I am 5'11" tall and 250lb, Though the last 50lbs are recent. But let me go back to the beginning of my school years at George Howland, followed by Hess Upper Grade, then Harrison High. Most of the friends I had in High School I had in grammar school (Howland and Hess), Dowan, Ronald, Marvin, and Dan from Kindergarten and first grade. James (Fourth grade), Terry, Emmett, Thomas, Cleotha, Isaac, Willie and a few more from seventh grade at Hess. They were all VERY popular in high school some more than others. There were some girls: Pat, Annie, Mary, Kathy to name a few and they too were friends from grammar school. I don't think I made many lasting friendships in high school. Time and distance has broken most of those bonds. Most of my friends today are from the military and work.
