Samuel's Story

Life 11/10/2010 It's been a busy 4 months. We are getting ready to celebrate the 1st birthday of our son, Aiden. He literally came to us at a Cracker Barrel on July 3rd at nearly 8 months old. Instant Dads! And we are loving it. We knew last year's loss meant something, but we could never have imagined something as great as this. It's great to finally be a dad. 09/05/2009 Well, it just didn't work out. We were there for the birth of Ellie (August 12), and for 1.5 days got to experience life as new dads. The first diaper change went to me, as did the first feeding. It was a great experience. By the second day, the birth mom decided she loved the little girl too much. While heart breaking, our agency did a great job in preparing us for this to happen. We've had limited contact with the birth family and all appears to be okay with them. We're happy we got to have the experience, and more importantly are more certain that we do want to be dads. All the way down, we were keeping our thoughts on preparedness to ourselves. It was great to have 15 hours of a drive back to talk and find out that we shared the same fears and now the same certainties. I'm a a blessed man to have James in my life, and the support of all of our family, friends, and neighbors. I think everyone else took the news harder than we did! 06/28/2009 Big news! We're getting closer (due August 8). Our birth mother went into early labor on Friday, but they stopped the contractions since she is only 34 weeks along. And, last Monday, the second ultrasound showed that we might be having a girl! Kind of a shock, but we just hope the little one (and mother) is healthy. As for a girl's name, I think we've settled on Eliana Justine. Now if we could just figure out the last name (I want McCoy-Ball but James wants it the other way...). We're traveling to Louisiana to visit for a few days and get the adoption paper work fast-tracked. Probably going to go again in a few weeks, and hopefully be coming back with a beautiful boy or girl. We also had a family reunion recently, and sadly had to mark the passing of an old family friend. It was great to see Alice Wilt (Wendy's mom) and Donna Rolston (Sherri's mom) there, and catch up on what's all be happening in Sabina. 04/10/2009 Exciting news! James and I are going to be dads (hopefully!). We were selected by a birth mother through a family contact, and have been talking with her and the birth father for about two months now. We found out a few weeks ago she is carrying a boy, and we came up with a name: Eliot Jacob (nickname Eli). She is due August 15th, and if all goes well,...Expand for more
we'll be dads soon. This Easter marks the 11th anniversary of my father's passing, and James and my 11th anniversary. I secretly hope Eli is born on August 4th, as it would have been my dad's 80th birthday. Drop a line and let me know how things are with all of the old classmates. 11/1/2008 I almost forgot to mention that James and I are now on the list with an adoption agency in hopes of adopting a newborn before I'm 45! (hopefully sooner though). I'll certainly update when we have a potential match. 01/2008 - Another update...I turned 40 last week, yeah, we are all getting so old! James and my sister, Susie Chaney, had a surprise birthday party for me at a local restaurant. I had no idea that my closest friends, co-workers, and old/new neighbors would be there. I just thought we were having dinner with my sister and brother-in-law! James started planning a month before and managed to keep me out of the loop...sneaky! To everyone turning 40 this year, congratulations. I didn't think I would ever really see it when I was in high school, but oh the memories I've made. I hope all of you have too! Time to update again. James and I did adopt a rescued Dane. His name is Franklin and he's terrific! We also bought a new house just north of Cincinnati (in the community of Landen). The boys have trails to walk, a larger yard, and a lake. I'm still working with with the Court, but thinking of a change. Updated 10/2006 - Bad news to update. Our Greate Dane, Crusoe, passed away October 18. He had been battling a liver disease diagnosed 4 months prior. We thought he would make it, but unfortunately he couldn't battle the disease. James, me, and our Pyr, Apollo were at his side to the end. He was only 5 1/2 years old but he taught me so much about love, patience, and kindness. We are currently looking to adopt a rescued Dane. Not a replacement (nothing could replace our buddy), but we just need the love these gentle giants provide :) Updated 10/2005 - Thought I should update this. I now work for Hamilton County Juvenile Court in the Information Systems area as a programmer analyst. James and I are still living in Cincinnati, but hopefully will move to the Baltimore area before 2010. We had an addition to the family, another dog (a Great Dane). The house still requires a lot of work but we are making progress. Original Bio - Currently a partner in an internet software-development company based in Northern Kentucky. Moved to Cincinnati in 1995. Fell in love with James Ball (yes, I finally came out) in 1998 and we bought our house in 2000. We have two great "kids", a dog and a cat.
