Sandra (Sandy)'s Story

After high school, I graduated from Yuba College and then Chico State in 1966. I was in the first year that 5 years were required for a teaching credential so finished that in 1967. I married Ron Griffin from Paradise in August of 1966 so Ron finished his Senior year and I my 5th year as married students. Ron was hired by the Defense Contract Audit Agency (Federal Government) and we moved to the bay area, knowing Ron would probably be drafted, which he was within two months. He reported for the bus from Chico to head to basic training, and I waved goodbye and headed to Gridley, CA for my first day of teachers' meetings there as I had been hired after student teaching there. I taught 2nd grade for two years, actually a year and a half, until I left for maternity leave when expecting our first son in March of 1969. Ron spent his first year in the army in Virginia and I thought I would be joining him there, until he got his orders for Viet Nam. I joined him for his last week in June of 1968 in Virginia and we got to spend a month together before he left for Viet Nam. He got home on my birthday in June of 1969 and got to meet his son for the first time at three months old. We headed back to the bay area and spent the next 35 years there, 34 of them in Cupertino. We had two more sons, 3and a half years later and then a nice surprise 10 years later than that. (13 year span, but close brothers) I worked in the Cupertino School District for 22years, as a substitute teacher and School Improvement Plan Coordinator, and noon yard duty and other odd jobs until we re...Expand for more
tired in 2002. I have continued a contracted job as the district engraver and sign maker, and am still on the sub list even though we moved back to Chico in 2004. My sisters are here, and my mom moved up here also since we were all here. My dad passed away in 2001 so mom thought it would be good to join all three of us. Our brother is still in Yuba City, but lives 13 miles south of town on a man made water ski lake. Ron's dad and step mom were still in Paradise when we moved up here so it was good to be able to help them a bit and see them much more often until they passed away. We enjoy Chico, and have a yard that is probably too big as we also travel a lot, especially to the bay area to visit our kids and grandkids, and Giants games. We also have Ron's parents property in Paradise now. Our oldest son is the principal at the Santa Clara District continuation high school and our youngest son is a PE teacher in the same district. Our middle son is a Pastor and just moved from Santa Rosa to Grass Valley to be the senior pastor of Sierra Presbyterian Church in Nevada City. Our most recent excitement was that we had two grandsons born on the same day, March 27th, and they are not twins. Our middle son and youngest son and their wives had babies born on the same day. We did a bit of running back and forth between Santa Rosa and San Jose, to see them both that day. That makes 5 grandchildren, 4 boys and a girl. We hope we can continue to keep up with everyone for a long time to come. We hope to see lots of you at our 5oth reunion. Where has that time gone?
