Sandra E.'s Story

A Memoir of My Education* Life* & Career* Highlights: After CHS graduation, I received a scholarship to attend Boston University and earned a BA in Hispanic Language & Literature with a minor in American Studies. While attending B.U., I participated in a Study Abroad Program in Madrid, Spain for two Fall semesters. Then after College graduation, I began working on my first M.S. in Education in Special Education at Fordham University in NYC, while simultaneously working as a Preschool teacher in the Bronx with students with special needs. These experiences and working hard expedited the process of obtaining my Teaching Certification. Two years later, I earned another M.S. in Education in TESOL at Long Island University which allowed me to teach adults, English as a Second Language in the evenings part-time. Currently, I've been teaching 24 years full-time as a Special Education/Bilingual Resource Room Teacher in the Yonkers School District. In addition, I am assigned as a District-wide Bilingual Educational Evaluator in the same district. I also had the opportunity to teach freshman college students as an Adjunct Professor in ESL (English as a Second Language) in American Culture at Mercy College. In 2008, as a special recognition for Community Work, I was selected as a Recipient of the GAVIOTA Award for "Educator of the Year" through the LATYN organization of Yonkers, NY. Along with the award, I was presented with a Mayoral Citation from the City of Yonkers. In terms of my personal life, I decided to purchase a charming home in Westchester County, NY in 2000. I am also a proud parent pet owner of a Siberian Husky, Misty who likes exercising with me and is great company most of the time. I enjoy traveling to Spain, Portugal and Italy during summers off (France is next on my list), riding my mountain bike in the Spring and viewing the skies on long hikes at the Rockefeller Preserve Park with my ...Expand for more
special honey during any season. Although I am very fond of the city of Concord, NH I wasn't originally from there but born and raised in the Bronx, NY. I was a former ABC high school student for three years at Concord Senior HS. This was due to having received recommendations from my Bronx, NY JHS teachers to participate in the ABC Program (A Better Chance) which was funded by the United Way organization. This particular program targeted highly self-motivated students in giving them a better chance to succeed and the opportunity to realize their dreams. Many high schools that participated in the program were CHS's support staff who were inclined to select several minority students from inner cities from within different States, which in this case included me in attending and competing within their high school in NH as a Hispanic-American or Puerto Rican. I certainly must acknowledge that it was a quite challenging endeavor to have to leave home at such an early age of 15 to attend CHS. However, it was so well worth the effort in every way; it represented to me to be able to build a strong foundation in the present that would lead to something solid to stand on for the future! I will forever cherish the special friendships, learning experiences and defining moments there. Not to mention, that the ABC program was generously sponsored and supported by the United Way (aka the Caring Champs). Unfortunately though, in this straining economy to my knowledge United Way no longer runs programs like these. However, there are similar programs in High Schools in NY such as Upward Bound which helps prepare students to adjust and prepare for college beforehand. My hope is that all students everywhere would make the most of these opportunities at any stage of their lives. They owe it to themselves to try to reach their fullest potential as best as they possibly can. All the Best Always!! XOX ~Sandy R.
