Sandra's Story

Life Where did the time go? It seems as though it were yesterday when I was in High School and now I am retired and 54 years old. I have lived in the Central part of California (Modesto) since 1969. I have a son who is 36, and two cute grandbabies. I found the love of my life (Zane) in the early 90s and we were married on April 29, 2000. I love to read, travel, spend time with family and friends, and four wheel anywhere. I have spent so much time working that trips were difficult to take, so now we spend about 1/3 of our time boating on the California Delta. We are both going to do what we have only dreamed of doing by traveling, enjoying the fruits of our labor and enjoying every minute of the rest of our lives. College I earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. Workplace In my early years I worked as a waitress and then a bartender. I quickly realized that I needed to look to my future and needed to plan for my retirement. In 1978 I began working for the Stanislaus...Expand for more
County Sheriff's Department as a deputy. I was promoted to sergeant in the early 80s and then to lieutenant in 2000. My last assignment was facility commander of the Men's Jail, which is a hard-lock (maximum security) facility that books people into custody and houses men 18 years of age and older. I cannot tell you how much I loved the Men's Jail. From 1989 until approximately 1998 I was a shift sergeant in the Men's Jail as well as the operations sergeant (right arm of the facility commander). I was the first female sergeant to be transferred to the Men's Jail in 1989 and no one thought I would succeed. I was told that women just couldn't handle male inmates. They were wrong! I have worked with and enjoyed the company of many deputies throughout the years. It was an honor to go full circle and command the Men's Jail. Again, I was the first female to receive this honor. Point? I haven't changed very much from when I was in High School. Don't tell me I can't do something, because that will be the first thing I will prove I can do.
